This one was too long in editing and I'm not sure if I'm on a good track. Comments are most welcome. This was mostly done in a b&w adjustment layer... I also tried to edit it following drAchoo's tutorial (some steps that were applicable) but that didn't go too well. There is some amount of dodge on the big tree.

ETA: Wow, fantastic comments overnight, thank you all so much. Here is the location.

Here's the unedited full-scale jpeg.

The thing about the darkness that most of you noticed is, that I've tried it. It didn't have as much impact, but that's just my own perception. Apart from that, it ruined the tree part a little. I think it could be done by playing with the yellow tones during the B&W conversion, but selectively, e.g. in a layer using a soft brush - now that is what I'm not very good at.

Btw this was supposed to go to free study but somehow I'm glad it ended up here :).

I love how the lines of trees lead the viewer straight to the water. I like how the clouds add extra interest to the sky. I personally like the color version better. Have you thought about making a shot that is entirely blue in colortone?

Very nice- the line of trees, and their decreasing size especially, pull me into the image. An interesting thing about this shot is that I visually began at the left, which is unusual, since it was the darkest portion and we are normally drawn to light areas. I can only surmise that this was due to the sprawled branches. At any rate, the row of the trees then pulls the viewer into the scene, into the sky that spreads back out with the clouds. I agree with Robert though- initially I completely missed the stream, and I actually thought that the lake was in fact simply lighter colored grass or just illuminated more fully. I'm not entirely sure how it would be possible to make the lake more obviously a lake, or really if that's even in the interest in the photo. Sometimes some ambiguity works, and it's certainly not obtrusive, leaving the viewer wanting, so I think it's alright as is.

I like the composition with the row of 4 tree/shrubs. I agree with you and others that the stream is lost and I think that diagonal line made by the stream is an important element in your original. looking forward to Bear's - hopefully it will be posted here.

It's a good photo and you've done well in editing. But for my taste, I'd like the forground not so dark. Just a tad lighter. But it's only my view, perhaps you've already tried it like that. Anyway, well done, it's a splendid BW

Can you post up a full-size, unedited JPG? Let me see what i can do to make the stream pop in B/W? I have some ideas... Please PM me if you do, I am not visiting this regularly. It's a wonderful picture, in the main, but we need to reveal the stream.

I think you did a good job editing it. The b/w tones are nice and rich and I like the line of trees. You could try shadow/highlight adjustment to lighten your foreground, stream and some parts of the that major tree on the left - like the root area with pebbles around it. You may like it, you may not. :) The trunk/root on that tree looks awesome by the way. I'd try a dramatic, low angle/upward full tree shot on that one with some of the stream in the foreground leading up to it - either early morning or late afternoon, when the sun hits it nicely.

I like the b/w edits because I can enjoy a full range (from darkest to lightest grays). I also noticed lots of "V" echoes that I really like (in the branches of the trees, the valley of the mountains, the clouds in the sky) all which lead my eye from the left through the pic, toward the valley, then up to the sky.

Sky is beautiful. I miss the stream though. Not sure how to make it pop in b/w. Maybe a slightly different PoV (e.g. more to the left and down may make the stream more prominent).

The first thing that strikes me and draws me in is the apparent line of the trees leading towards the hills in the background. Having said that, it does feel like the trees are blocking the left side of the shot a little.

For the large part I like the editing, the black and white tones work well for the sky and the hills in the background, but I feel the foreground and the trees are too dark. This may be why it feels like they are blocking out some of the image, because there is not much detail in the trees themselves.

It probably doesn't help that because of the contrast between the darker foreground and brighter background that only the background really draws attention, despite the fact that it seems to only play a supporting element to the trees.

Overall a nice shot, I like the sky and background hills but find myself wanting to see more of them rather than the trees.
