Sorry I never explained this before. I just thought it should speak for itself. This is my father in his final year. He spent it in a nursing home. He wasn't himself...couldn't really talk much. Wasn't too aware. But here I was visiting him in Indiana...far from my home so I didn't get there much. This was a "lounge" room on his floor we could use for a private (prepared) lunch with him. Actually, inside I know he was happy because I was there visiting. He did realize that. He died at age 90, so he had a long life, and a reasonably good one.

I don't take it quite the way Yo_Spiff does. I do get that it's the end of his life, but I don't necessarily see sadness. What's sad about getting to live the length of life that this man has been able to live. We all grow older. We all die. Longevity is all we can ask for. This man has achieved that.

I also think the fishey works well here. It pulls you into his soul a bit and makes him stand out from the background.

Obviously a powerful shot that's getting a lot of reaction and analysis. Well done.

The slight distortion adds to the effect of looking in on the man. The lighting and the table add to a kind voyeuristic feel.

This portrait has so much sweetness that one wishes to know more about this man. Imprisoned in his cell, imprisoned still in his body - the shadows on the floor come from a rather homey window - great effect. The table set rather neatly makes one feel better though. He has the expression of someone who still has stories to tell.
Where did you take the photo?
Thanks for a great image.

The image and title suggests to me that this man is not doing much with himself and is more or less just waiting around to die. Makes me quite sad. Also makes me resolve that this is not going to be me. A very strong portrait that says an awful lot.
