Wm. Blake, "and did those feet"
[Feb. 20th, 2011 01:36:02 PM]
Crofton Mills, Vancouver Island
I never see this without thinking of William Blake's poem, which, set to music, we sang every year at my school's closing:
And did those feet in ancient time.
Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On Englands pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In Englands green & pleasant Land.
(Blake's original is without apostrophes. It is untitled and appeared in his preface to "Milton," a poem). |

The smoke from those stacks glows, an eerie dark and dismal landscape that sparkles and glows. |

What Penny said. Something quite different with the poem. My lukewarm comment clearly only scratched the surface. |

On my first viewing it appeared too dark and the whites too white. But together with the poem, which I didn't know, it's just perfect - in fact rather luminous. |

I like your composition, but why so low key? I wish there were some whites in this photo. |

Beautiful industrial photograph. Love the irony of the imagerly most people have of the title vs. the reality. |

I love the lightness of the smoke. I wish there was just a tad more definition and light on the factory. Nice use of B & W. |
