The actual title of this is "Twenty-two and three-eighths inches." It is one of a series called Measurements of a Woman which raises questions about the 36-24-36 tradition. Since you don't get to see the series, I thought my intent would be clearer if I used the series title as the photo title.

I don't expect this image to do very well with the popular vote; it is a picture that should make people uncomfortable rather than being nice to look at. But it fits well in the tradition of contemporary photographic art that raises questions about gender and race.

For more of my views about fine art photography, see my photographers comments on my entry in the last fine art challenge:

I really appreciate having received an honorable mention from the jury.

They said:

"The hardest one to judge, I think. Full of messages, seems to be informed by an emancipatist paradigm. It is well constructed - perhaps overly so... pin-sharp, close in, nowhere to hide for the viewer. You will look, you will see in a way the subject cannot when subject to such 'measurement'. I pick up echos of quantum mechanics in the image too - the whole observation/measurement futility thing (I do know I've extrapolated here). And then look at the numbers on the tape as it intersects the eyes 18-21, the cusp of adulthood, I don't think that's accidental. I think this is well made and more thoughtful than I had thought when I dismissed it from my own list."

I also appreciate receiving Fourth Honors from the Alt Fine Arts Jury.

They said:

"- It is definitely a concept image.

- It certainly SAID something which I agree with, but as far as art, it just missed the mark for me.

- I still like the artlessness of measurement. (I thought it was hardly trying at all).

- Measurement is a tough one for me. I think the same impact could be delivered by merely describing it. It would only take a couple sentences. Still, there's something about it..."

Thanks. I'm doing very well. I will do more of the Sunset Series at some point but my personal sunset seems further in the future than it did a year ago.

Dan, I'm glad I didn't have to buy you a snuggie this year! I'm happy to see you made The Judges' List and look forward to seeing what you come up with next year (or the next time this particular challenge comes around again). For what it's worth, I gave this image a 7. :-)

A 10 from me. I found it contemplative. The sharpness added the details of a face that is not 18-21, I particularly liked that you did not process the skin. Again, well done.

As I voted on the challenge entries this one always stopped me. I weighed and considered this powerful image with every pass. One to remember.

I like photos that are clearly making a statement without defining exactly what the statement is. Could probably (therefore) do without the title but I try not to let titles sway me either way. High marks from me.

an apparently unlaboured profoundity. and I do wish it were not still so profound. a fine featured woman, not too young, not too old, who knows what is what... and still persist the measurers who think the sybil is blind,

Dark and disturbing. One to ponder.

Interesting concept. I think you had an intriguing idea, which could have been quite provocative, but I feel like you played it safe - in the processing, the shooting angle, etc.
