i still have oh so much to learn.... this is done with extension tubes, and there are a quite a few flaws with it, but trying to focus with my cheap tripod with the super shallow DOF was a battle and my back was killing me after only a short while...

Tubes, one version of the poor person's macro. I personally use reversed lenses. best bet, at least from my exp. (notwithstanding my abyssmal rating in regard to the DPC) is NOT to use a tripod out in the field unless you can get your subject to move or move your camera as if on rails toward the subject. off-camera flash would be the key in that case.
