:: If It's Blue, You Should Drink It!! ::
The Idea:
I got the idea for this image when I was about to throw out a blue Bawls bottle (this wonderful drink is the lifeblood at my LAN parties). Just before I dropped the bottle in the trash, I thought what a great picture I could make with the pretty blue bottle. I eventually ended up using a clear glass bottle instead, because I couldn't get satisfactory illumination with the blue bottle.
The Setup:
I put UV-flourescent dye mixed with water into a clear glass Zima bottle, which I placed in a large glass bowl of ice and water. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any blue UV dye, so I used green instead, and adjusted the hue later so it looked blue (this worked fine since the only color in the scene was the green glow emitted by the UV dye). Then I arranged 4 cold cathode ultraviolet lights around the bowl. The 4 UV lights were all the lighting there was. The backdrop was a piece of black velvet.
Post Processing:
Neat Image, hue adjustment so the UV glow was a nice refreshing blue, cloned out a tiny reflection of the once-purple now-orange UV light, dodged, burned, and blurred to improve some details, curves adjustment, cropped, scaled, saved as JPEG. |

Ooooh. . . I really like this! I'm always drawn to blue, but this has such a cool (temperature cool) look to it. Very awesome!

Most shots are not cropped tight enough -- the photographer just does not get close enough to the subject. Looking at this image, I think you have found an image that just the opposite is true -- I think this image is begging for more negative space above it and probably to one side or the other.
Great idea with wonderful lighting and colors.
