My 1st challenge. Took up photography 3 months ago. Man, it is hard to be objective about one's own work, isn't it. This is my back porch, close to ground level. Adjusted midtones and used usm only.

hey Lita,
I like this picture, the angle that you chose and the texture and clarity. But this needs a little more DOF IMO, also give a little more space for the lines to merge a little ( the crop it too tight ). I don't know if F8 is the min. aperture your camera supports, but this might look better with a lesser aperture and if you showed the expanse more.
Also try to focus on nearly 1/3rd distance away from you keeping a low aperture, that might help increase your overall depth of field.
You can also try to convert this to b/w using channel mixer and get a more vibrant picture. the textures might get more prominent with a b/w conversion.
cheers,
KG

Nice idea, good exposure, nice detail in the grain of the wood. Nicely framed, the angle of the planks I mean. For me its a bit to tighly cropped, I would have liked to have seen further along the planks, more of the perspective effect.

It looks like you had great natural lighting. If you used the cameras smallest apature please disregard this comment ... I would have voted this picture much higher with a DEEP depth of field. (6)
