Challenge: Vanishing Point (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Clarendon Blvd. Arlington, VA
Date: Aug 10, 2004
Aperture: f/16
ISO: 100
Shutter: 6 sec
Galleries: Cityscape, Action

after a couple of days of messing around with a reliable mount and scouting decent locations, shooting day and night settings, this was my favorite of the bunch. The turning shots are cool, but "don't meet the challenge".

Let me tell you, having that much equipment hanging that far off the car on an open street is a little nerve-racking:
EOS 10D + Canon 16-35mm, not to mention the damage the mount would do to the car if it struck something.

the mount can be seen here:

I may post some outtakes after the challenge if there's interest.

This is really good!

You've got to be completely insane. Thats alot of weight to be hanging off the side of your car. Great shot,. this was one of my 9's from the challenge.

thanks for all the positive comments. this was not an easy rig to setup and I had this idea early on, so I wasn't rushing to make it happen, as I have in the past. Check out this thread for some "outtakes":

Brilliant steadiness in this motion shot.

just beautiful

Looks very similar to Midnight Run, but absolutely awesome.

Really cool shot, the vanishing point is kinda hard to pick out cause of the blur of everything, but I think it's there so you get a 7.

This is an awesome photograph! The colors are beautiful and the focus on the car is dead on. But that's my problem with it as well... At least for this challenge. The subject of this photo is the car as opposed to 'vanishing lines'.

This is going for top 10, deserves a ribbon imo, I really like the lights and the clarity of the car.

Outstanding, wonderful, superb. This shot captures the eye in many ways. The motion blur of the lights and sharpness of the car is really spectacular. The exposure is spot-on. A top 10 for sure, maybe a ribbon. Congrats ahead of time!

This is a wonderful shot. I loved it and gave you a 9.

cool photo. i like the sharpness in the car, maybe a bit more exposure time would have made the trail of lights a bit more exciting.

Flashy. Good idea. I give this one a 10. The best colors in this Challange.

Not sure how you got this shot, but its my favorite in this challenge. I love how the car is focused except the wheels which are obviously turning. Looks like your heading into the vanishing point. I could see this on my wall.

WOW COOL SHOT! I like it ... THe motion blur seems totaly indipendant from the clear focus on the seam in the door jam. So I'm thionking that the camera on time exposure or remote trigger had a rear curtain synch on a flash ??? How did you do it ? (9)
08/11/2004 04:05:14 AM
bugger, i thought mine was going to do well until I saw this :D

Great (and very brave) shot. Roof looks a little bumpy and I would have cropped a bit off the top myself.

However, smooth colors, smooth detail on the car and simply a supa-shot! My tip for 1st

Always a photo idea, especially for vanishing if done right, and you did it.
