Location: My kitchen table

This is the first picture I took with my new Canon EOS-300D Rebel. These flowers were sitting on my kitchen table where I was opening my gigantic package from Amazon.com, and I figured why not?

After taking the photo, I did some minor editing on Adobe Photoshop 7.0. There were some small, distracting dark spots on the petals that I cloned out and when I switched the photo to greyscale, I slightly adjusted the levels to bring out the highlights and shadows.

nice sunflower, needs more contrast to make it interesting. Your histogram is pretty flat. Do the ectra flowers in the background add anything? They seem distracting to me, especially the bright white ones. Maybe a different crop would have worked better? I think of a sunflower as tall, it seems odd to be looking down on it.

there seems to have been more light on the smaller flowers giving them more contrast, than on the subject. the grays are too muddy to actually bring this flower alive. a bit more light perhaps, or bring up the levels a bit in post.

the lighter small flowers to the right are competing for attention with the sunflower, also there is a strange lack of pure white in your photo (maybe check your monitor calibrations) 8

The B&W seems such a disservice to the beautiful colors that I'm sure this scene affords. Contrast is a bit too high and detail is missing in both highlights and shadows. It's too bad because composition really looks good.

wonderful shot. but i think that it would score much higher in vivid colours.

doesn't seem very effective in b&w to me

This shot has lots of things going for it: the composition and crop are excellent, but the small flowers on the right are quite blown, which distracts from your subject.

why take away the yellow..? the almost center/off center placement does not work I think

Focus on the petals is good. Composition is fine but perhaps a bit busy. For me, the B&W detracts from the image rather than helping. The background is distracting ... too blurry to be in focus. Too in focus to be shallow DOF.
