Longhorn cattle, once prolific throughout the western US, are making a comeback. They are hardy, able to forage in less than ideal conditions, and amazingly docile. These ladies are free-range cattle currently inhabiting BLM land in the foothills of Colorado. We came upon them while hiking and after a moment of observing each other and an impromptu photo op, we all went our separate ways. As I was editing this image, I noticed the black cow has an eye injury and will most likely lose her left eye. I suppose that is one of the hazards facing free-range cattle.

Cattle ranching has been a time-honored occupation throughout the western U.S.

I never would have thought that animals with horns like that could be docile lol. I see this and read your description and now I have an image in my head of two girlfriends out for a walk lol. This is great.

i like the tones a lot - fitting the old time feel but I am not crazy about the upper left - the hills/ mountains and the sky make it almost seem like it was cut out

That's some serious horns on that cattle. The processing gives this image the look an feel of those old time picture postcards. Nice.

my parents were cattle ranchers in colorado and montana, but mostly got out of the business before i was old enough to really participate in the experience. my older siblings refer to me and my younger brother as the "city slickers."

good shot and I like your treatment - gives it a old photograph feel. might try taking it a little farther and do a desat and monochrome/sepia conversion to see what you get.

Makes me think of those wonderful wild west movies where they drive the cattle through town and a few invariably bust into the saloon! Great shot.
