Other select photos from the shoot here.
This is the first time I have ever had the chance to shoot in an actual studio environment. This shot was one out of over nine hundred forty I captured that day. This was part of a Groupon to shoot at a 4-hour "class" courtesy of the LA Photo School and Dove Shore. The models also purchased a Groupon but for test shots. Basically, amateurs shooting amateurs with not more than minute of instruction. It was fun and tiring. All the learning was essentially having the experience and asking questions. If I get the chance to do it again, my motto is going to be "slow it down" and "come prepared". I was not prepared to give instruction so some models were much easier to shoot than others. This gorgeous girl was frustrating to shoot. Not because she wasn't a good model but because you (I) felt like with such a beautiful face and body you end up brimming with excellent photos. And thus I see how a real pro photographer must have technical excellence, vision, and communication skills. But enough about the so-called class.
The lighting setup was basically one reflected strobe roughly 5 feet from the model's face and another two or three feet above. I'm sure this has a name but I have next to zero formal training. You can see the setup in the far end of this photo:
Shot in JPEG because I knew I'd run out of disc space if I used RAW. Converted to B&W and cropped in Lightroom. Photoshop work included cloning out blemishes, sharpening facial features, perhaps some dodging in the teeth and eyes, and cloning out a tiny piece of the dress that was visible on the far shoulder, then resize and save for submission. |
