Thanks for all the comments, all are very helpful in learning to be a better photographer. This was not a "staged" or planned shot, i was wandering around the house and found this candle lit in a pretty dark room with curtains drawn. I thought about testing my Sigma 30mm f1.4 hand-held and just took this shot. I liked the way it came out.

Though this is an Advanced Editing challenge, i am a hobbyist that does not post-process images much beyond adjusting exposure compensation and/or white balance. This image however is untouched, directly out of camera.

However, this photo doesn't offer me a lot of context. This cool of a candle leads me to believe that this is in a cool place, so I would like to see it.

Do you mean sharpen it in post-process or just use a higher f-value as the 1.4 is too soft?

Very hard to have your first challenge on DPC be a best of. I think you have great potential. When I started here I had an eye for a good photograph but no post processing skills. Keep it up and be active in the forums and you could learn a lot. I see you have an image in another challenge right now. Good luck with that. Can't wait to see which is yours.

There is something really good about this, its easy to get lost in all the comments about making it better. You liked the way it looked the balance of the composition, the golden light, it works.

The golden light in the back adds to this image.

While not a horrible photograph for what it is, I don't find it interesting.

Nice mood setting although the candle holder could be a tad sharper.

centered too much? like the left side with it, not so sure the right side adds much. gl.

the dead center composition isn't doing this any favors.

The gold tones throughout the photograph echo the flame nicely.
