i agree with bassbone about trying it with the horizon in the center. for me it feels too heavy up top and the bottom third doesnt have enough interest to balance the shot out. having the shot more symmetrical would be more interesting for me.
the colors are wonderful and the focus is good. i also agree that a b&w might look really good for this one. |

I like the shimmery nature of the lights. I am just not sure I like the placement of the horizon - I think if it were my photo, I would have dropped the horizon on center.
Regarding the question on the aperture and focus - the objects he is focused on are all at a similar focal plane (near infinity) so he is not going to be a problem especially using a wide angle set up as he did.
DOF calculators are a cool thing and can answer this question pretty quickly. The benefit of going to the 'middle' of the f-stop range for landscapes often has more to do with hitting the 'sweet spot' of lens where the images are sharpest. You want to close down the aperture if you want both objects very close to the camera and far away to be 'in focus'. In the case of the photo here, there is no close object to worry about.
A quick DOF calculation shows that if he was focused at objects more than 15 or 20 feet away at 18mm on his Canon T3 at f3.5, his near focus point would by about 8-10 feet and his far focus point would be infinite.

Hi El Roi. I was shooting in shutter priority mode (not confident enough to go full manual) and that was the aperture set by the camera as shutter speed of 6s. Certainly didn't do anything special with my technique that I know of. Did use manual focus though and set the self timer for a couple of seconds. |

It looks like a wondrful paint when veiwing the full size. Its a really well done image! the colors are great and really make this image stand out. :)
I agree with the idea about a B&W conversion. This would be interesting to see in B&W. |

Very good shot. I am sure it looks awesome at full resolution. Question: How did you get everything in focuse using f3.5? I saw you used the same aperture on another shot too and it looks nice and focused to infinity. Is it a misprint or are you doing something special with your technique?

Thanks Silent Shooter. I was happy with this shot and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. Will try the B&W conversion. |

Very nice. I love the simplicity of this shot. Technicals are good too - sharp, composition is good. Processing looks spot on. A good B&W conversion would be awesome! |
