With all of the discussions recently of photography vs art,
And with all of the discussions in the best of scores thread,
Let's see if we can have an Art of 2011 challenge.
Challenge description: You've submitted your best photograph of 2011, but it may not be your most artistic shot. Here's your chance. Find a shot taken in 2011 that fits your definitition of "art".
There's still time -- if we can talk Langdon into doing it quickly, we probably still have some things in the back of our mind from searching for best of.
If you're interested, respond here, but I'm also posting it on the get satisfaction DPC ideas site -- maybe we'd get more notice if we responded there.
Could be a lot of fun.
Maybe the jury would even volunteer to be a part of this?

Always like being able to pull out the archive shots and given the focus I'm keen on this. |

Only if it's Expert Editing. ;) |

I think the problem with this is that announcing it after the commencement of the 'best of 2011' challenge means that many people will be entering B-sides. Despite that though, I'm all up for having another go at dragging one of my 2011 photos out of the archives! |

I think for an 'art' challenge with no other criteria, expert would be the only way to go. |

"Intolerance respecting other people's religion is toleration itself in comparison with intolerance respecting other people's art."
Wallace Stevens
My photography would be panned in a big challenge like this, because the judging panel would not (and have not in the past) found anything about my photography "artistic".

Naw... The whole idea is the discussion of what constitutes art. With expert editing, it's pretty obvious what is photography and what is art. But for regular captures, advanced editing, it's much more subjective. That's what makes this challenge more interesting.
If you submit what you think is an artistic photograph, and people are voting on their own definitions of what is art, it will be interesting to see how it turns out. |

I wasnt imagining this would be juried in any way.... I also think it should be Advanced. |

So, would this be a little like the Fine Arts challenge only picking a shot from 2011? |

I'm thinking art vs fine arts. This is more exploring what each person thinks of as art.

No juried panel, then? Let the members vote. We don't need a select panel defining art for us. Should be the Advanced Editing ruleset. |

Definitely a good idea.
Definitely not a good idea to do it with EXPERT editing. I personally don't think it counts as photography.
Just my 2 cents. |

Sounds like a Best of 2011 without landscapes or macro shots.
I can't see any difference between this one and the Fine art challenge, except for when we shot it. Does it make sense? I'd prefer a fine art challenge with new images. |

Great idea Wendy. I'd love to do it and also agree that 'expert editing' is another competition.

Wendy, you'll be surprised at this but I don't think it should even mention the word art. Art.
Most people are baffled/defensive/resentful at having to be measured against someone else's criteria regarding what's art and what's not art. And it matters not if it's the criteria of everyone, or of any panel of jurists you care to name.
So I would not change anything about your suggestion except the title. My own view is that it should be a title that challenges people to make a biographical statement about themselves ... that is, "submit the picture from 2011 that most powerfully defines you as a photographer".
Maybe it could be called "You in 2011".
And that doesn't make it a Free Study, except for those lost souls who have formed no view at all of themselves as photographers. The voter is therefore obliged to consider the entries from an unencumbered start point, and to reward the most convincing work, in whatever genre.
ETA: Then again, maybe that's what we already have in a Best of 2011?

I wish you posted this before the best of 2011 challenge, I would have entered the same image; however, it's a great exercise, and I'll enjoy going through 2011 again. I also agree with Paul, skip the art connection. |

Yup. That's what we have in best of 2011.
I'd really like to keep art in the title. We've lived through art competitions before. If people want to get ticked off, that's nothing unusual. We do that with each challenge. :)
This was a chance to explore what people think is art. This is a chance to give some of us the guts to enter something that's least than perfect, but might be considered art. This is more of an exploration challenge, imo. My best photography picture is certainly not what I would consider the most artistic.

Wendy, I like your last comment, although certainly great photography can be art. Just so you know, I saw Paul using a tripod yesterday!
I'm curious to see what you consider your best photography. Really. |

I'm always up for an art challenge, but I think it should just be a new challenge. Give everyone an opportunity to create new art :-) |

There is value in both, it is almost time for Fine Art: Exhibit 3. |
