So, I thought of an idea for my Mom's X-Mas present.
A little background; My parents used to have this painting of an old wrinkled man gorging himself with spaghetti. He seemed to be Italian and about turn of the 20th century. It was a pretty dramatic low key piece, and if I remember correctly he was using two forks with his face low to the plate but looking kinda toward the painter.
When my Dad died, my Mom lost the house and the picture was never seen again. I would like to recreate the shot but with myself eating the pasta, and frame it for her. I've searched the internet to try to find it to get the lighting and orientation close to no avail...
Anyone ever seen this one?
thanks in advance... |

Thanks, but No,
He his straight on to the viewer and low key. Not B&W, but pretty dark, maybe some mahogany and golds...
I know I am looking for a needle in a haystack, but I figured I'd ask here also. |

this?
looks similar to what you described although not too wrinkly nor is looking to the painter. Your description is much better in my opinion. |

first, you need to find an altar boy and buy yourself a yarmulke. then you need some fat noodles.
Looks like candle light, sepia tone. |

Looks like a single softbox/umbrella on axis about 10-20 degrees above the camera. |

It looks like there is one source of light, in front of the spaghetti eater and placed rather high. You can see it from the shadows and from the bright area on his head. |

I'll post my results; It is going to be a week or so. I just ordered the Monk Costume off eBay. |

Yup -- his hands are making shadows on the table, and the bowl is shadowing straight back, but there's not much of a shadow under the nose... ?

Would you settle for a Priest Eating Ramen on canvas? ...cheap. |

His nose hooks down enough to block most of the shadow except right at the edges. I agree a soft light directly in front and probably between 30-45° above as measured along an axis from where his body meets the table.
Those look more like wide egg noodles than regular pasta.
The brownish/yellowish tones are probably from/contributed-to by aging varnish if the original is an oil painting; when new it was probably somewhat more vibrant.
I think the idea of re-creating the picture for your mom is great -- eventually you might want to print it on canvas ... |

Visit a local synagogue. They usually give the yarmulkes away. |

Any suggestions? I know it isn't the same pose, but I liked this one...
I couldn't find any Pappardelle, so I cooked some lasagna and sliced it lengthwise...

Nope! you must look directly into the camera lens. It's for your Mom. Light your eyes so she can see them. My opinion. |

Hmmmmm. As an intepretation, it's ok. As a reproduction...
1. the angle is too high. In the original, the viewer is almost straight on. This makes it more intimate.
2. the pose. The way he's holding the fork and ? makes it look like he's about to eat the pasta. The way you're holding them makes it look like you're about to start a motorcyle.
3. the attitude. He's clearly (happily) anticipating a delicious meal. To me, you look like you're scowling and trying to fend off a pack of hyenas.
4. the table top. This is a matter of personal choice, but I feel that the highly texture wood in your shot is very distracting. Something more even, or even a tablecloth, might be a better choice.
5. the lighting. There are a lot of dark shadows on your face, and IMO not enough separation from the bg (which I also feel is too dark). The face issues can be resolved with a white tablecloth, but the bg will need additional lighting, or be of a lighter color.
Overall, to me this is a much more menacing image than the original, which is rather lighthearted. If that was your intention, yaaay! |
