Yeah, but land means taxes and insurance. It requires outlay while you hold it.

But what makes investing in land so risky? Well, here are some issues to consider:

1. The majority of raw land purchases generate no income during the period of ownership, thereby creating a negative cash flow situation due to the accrual of ongoing property taxes.
2. Because land is fundamentally considered indestructible, there's no depreciation allowed for federal income tax purposes.
3. The municipality in which the land is located governs by zoning how the land can be used.
4. Development of the land is also subject to environmental testing and regulations.
5. Raw land is the most illiquid investment of all of real estate; which, as a whole, is considered to be an illiquid investment genre. It can take literally years to sell some land parcels, and others truly may not be marketable at any price.

... and while I fully agree with the pratfalls identified here, I guess I just lucked out a few years back. I took over the mortgage on a rather significant piece of land and low and behold a short time later a developer expressed an interest in it.

He put in the services and every time he built a house I got a portion of the sale price and did quite well. I still own several acres of property in different places that are all paid for (have been for decades) and those located in the ski resort area seem to be increasing in value every minute.

I guess I got my appreciation for land from my father who used to say: "Buy land... they don't make any more of that" and one must also remember that people like my father lived through the great depression and land was most certainly something one could depend on.

No matter, all that I own owned is now in my daughter's name... except my camera gear. :O)

Toby is a funny guy. I've watched a lot of his older Minecraft videos.

He cracks me up. I hope he gets a cool gig someday. I think he'd be a great TV host, even rivaling the likes of Tom Bergeron, who I also enjoy.

That's pretty funny. I think the point is who would have thought about ridiculing Apple two years ago? For most comedians it would have been ostracizing to much of their audience. We seem to have reached the tipping point where taking shots like this is back in vogue. We all remember when this happened to Microsoft and they never really got it back after that (not to say they went bankrupt or anything). I think it's more signs of a maturing company that can no longer sustain the growth rate it previously enjoyed.

Today was the first day I actually thought of buying, but I didn't. I didn't think it would get down to 400 though. Ouch.

AAPL reports after market close today. Will be interesting to see what transpires. Is this the bottom or will the slide continue?

I dumped ALL the rest of mine a while ago at $450. After all my buys & sells of AAPL, at least I finished off in the black, but not by much.
