Final Update! SEE LAST POST

Hey guys! Someone contacted me last night on deviantArt asking about the resolution of some of my images and I then gave him my e-mail address and he sent this to me. What do you all think about it?

Hi Lee,

I've come across a couple of your photographs on Deviantart and wondered whether I might ask you a few questions about them? The images on the website, are they the highest resolution copies you have? Or do you have ones which are 300dpi? The reason I ask, is that I work for a publishing house in London, and if you are so willing, and the images are high res enough for our designer to use, we might be interested in using them as front covers to our books. I'm currently particularly interested in Orchid and Floral II, which I have to say are beautiful but also also particularly striking, and remarkably sophisticated - I always feel art is like writing, and like it or not, and irrespective of natural talent, one tends only to reach a certain level of sophistication with age and experience: you prove me wrong!

I look forward to hearing from you, and sincerely hope that we can work together in the future.

With all the best,

Katya Aplin

ps, I'm kalpin, if you were wondering...

The post script was about his user name on deviantArt... but i don't know I'm pretty excited! And I don't think that this looks like a scam being that he contacted me on deviantArt as well through the private messenging system there. Well what steps do I take from here, how do I reply? I'm off to school in a few but please post your thoughts and I will try to respond when I can. All feedback is really appreciated!

Thanks everyone!
Lee

Woohoo!! (((hugs))) Very exciting, he has good taste!

My thoughts are to make enquiries about which publishing house he is associated with, just to check out his credentials. No idea of the next step but the others will be able to help.

Congratulations, Lee.

Katya has asked you a reasonable question, and if I were you I'd answer it. It's fairly innocuous; if your images aren't at least 300 dpi she probably will drop further inquiry.

You may want to wait on asking about her credentials until an offer of payment is made.

I'd simply respond providing the information requested and asking for more information on what kind of distribution the books would have and therefore what kind of price she is able to pay.

I would not send the images themselves until you have signed contracts.

And make sure your contract involves licensing (not selling) the photos.

What is the name of the company? Have you checked them out as legit?

The company is Hesperus Press -- looks pretty legit to me.

Congrats if this is legit! That'd be really cool :)

I do have a side question though...
I admit I have a lot to learn still but I don't quite understand them saying they need the picture at 300dpi. You can set any picture to 300dpi - wouldn't you need to know 300dpi at what dimension the image is?

Yea if someone could figure that out that would be great before I reply. Also, what dpi is a image out of the rebel? I am writing a response and I told them that I use the Rebel which produyces 6.3 megapixels at 3200X2400 pixels, but I do not know what that translates to.
If anyone can help me clarify...

that's 10.667 X 8 inches at 300dpi

k that's good... here's my quick reply

Hi Katya, thanks for your kind words.

The photos displayed on deviantArt are resized and scaled down from the originals. I use the Canon Digital Rebel 300D which produces 6.3 megapixel images which comes out to around 3200X2400 pixels straight out of the camera. These images can be upsized as well. The dpi for an image this size depends on the actual size that it will be printed on but your designers can decide if that is sufficient. For both of the photos you mentioned, as well as all of the photos I have posted, I have them at this original size.

If the images are at a high enough resolution it would be great If you could provide me some more information on what kind of distribution your books have and therefor pricing, etc., just so that I can have a better idea of what I am dealing with. It would be great to work something out with you and your company.

Thanks again for the inquiry,
Lee

UPDATE!!!

Just got this e-mail today. Gave me an idea of some figures... how do I respond? Is this a good offer? Can someone help me please!!!!

Hey Lee,

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but I managed to choose the best
time of the year to catch 'flu... Anyway, we really want to use both your
images, so let me tell you a little bit more about us. We're based in London
but are distributed widely in the US (almost half our sales are in the US)
and all over the world. I don't know what sort of figures you're looking
for, but for a small and relatively young company, we are doing incredibly
well, not only in terms of custom but in terms of international critical
acclaim. A large part of our books' appeal has always been the quality of
their production and their intrinsic beauty. The titles we are looking to
use your images for are by Francoise Sagan and Saki, both famous names and
wonderful works of fiction - unavailable apart from in our editions - which
we expect to be widely reviewed. They retail in the UK and Europe for around
£7.99, and you can get an idea of our market (as well as some of our
previously published works) in the States on our distributors' website [
//www.trafalgarsquarebooks.com/books/Hesperus/HespSpring06Complete.html
]

In terms of payment we can offer £200 per image (about $350 according to my
online currency converter) - I hope this sounds OK? It's the standard rate
over here. Do let me know if you have any further questions or if I've
omitted anything. I sincerely hope that we can come to an arrangement, as I
would be so excited to see your covers in the shops.

I look forward to hearing from you, and, in case I don't hear from you
before then (our office will be closed from Friday lunchtime until the 3rd
of January, but I should be able to pick up any emails), I'd like to wish
you a very merry Christmas.

Katya

Feedback is greatly appreciated and needed.

Thanks,
Lee

One word: Contract. If they are willing to sign one with these terms, you may be just fine.

BTW, is this a license or full rights they want to purchase?

How about sharing with everyone?

I know there are scams, but they usually follow some predictable script. This looks much more personal and less form-letterish. I'm betting it's legit.

As far as the money, hold out for $10k! ;-) Just kidding. My take on it is that if I created an image for fun/DPC/DeviantArt for no money and now someone wants to pay me anything for it, I would probably jump. Would be different if I did it for a living.

Hmmm - DeviantArt - never thought about that when I changed my username...

Good luck and congrats!

Thanks everyone.

Yea conglett, I will ask about the rights I will be granting them. I will also ask about a contract.

And Ken... I have the same theory as you... I took these with no intention of really selling them, so it's not like I was saving them for something bigger...

Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming... I need to run out for a bit... see ya guys around 6 server time.
