What your predictions on how well you guys will do score-wise for your shot. In other and simpler words: What do you think you will score? And, how many comments do you currently have? I have 1 and I think will end up just under 6 points.

Well, I have a headstart now ... I'm at about 4.6 with 3 comments. But I think it's still under 30 votes, so probably end up +/- 0.4 from where it is now. It would be fun to get a bunch of comments for a change!

I thought FOR SURE I finally had a shot that would do well. Clearly meets the challenge, great title, pretty well done technically (though not perfect), etc. Couldn't wait for the first hour of voting to see the early trends. Well...

Ugh. 4.85 something. No comments. And trust me, this one BEGS to be commented on.

If last week is any indicataion, I think I'll end up with 5.5 and about 10 comments. So far, my submission has almost the exact same scoring as it did last week.... with the same amount of votes (at about this time)...

My back hurts from taking HUNDREDS of pics of uncooperative fish today & ended up entering something I took back on the 17th. Pretty much don't expect more than it's running now at 4.2. Don't foresee too many comments either. Maybe just a handful like the Paralle lines. Boringly avg ;)

Just as a friendly reminder, you shouldn't talk about what your photo is during voting.

I don't think she did. She said she entered something she took on the 17th (date), not the 17th fish picture she took. At least that's what I think she meant! ;-)

Hoping & expecting for upper 5s again. Also expecting my first DQ request.

NP. It's the fish that were bad! ;) I've been cursing them all day.

I hear you on that one...I thought I'd finally get something over 5.5...and here I am at 4.7 with over 20 votes so far. If my previous two entries are any indication, I will end up with 4.6-4.8 :(!!

I got a little excited a little too fast. I started off with 10 votes and a 6.8, I just logged back on to check and at 30 votes I have dropped to a 5.6. Now if everyone that voted in the last hour will go change your votes on mine, I will be happy.

i feel that it's not about getting a Blue Ribbon, of course that would be wonderful...However, one thing I keep in mind how I can become better at what I shoot and don't shoot. The lower scores I get just push me to be more better and the higher scores reminds me that I'm getting better. it's all about haveing fun and learning here. Not really focusing (no pun intended) on getting a score, but to be happy for what I think is a great shot and too to have others enjoy my skills. For exsample: I scored very low on my Portrait, that's because it wasn't a liveing object....i knew that....and knew i would score low...but, there were a few people who did score me high due to the creative idea and concept that reach futher than that the challenge was. They saw more than just a pretty face, but deeper. I reached and made them think, and that was worth more than any high score or a Blue Ribbon.

I did better with parallel thatn I thought i might, but dropped nearly 1/2 point from start to finish.(still, second best finish for me). Overall I think the parallel voting was low, on average ( i couldbe wrong of course)

Orange wise, I am at a paltry 3.8, 26 votes no comments. This is a new low, by far for me. Umm, pic is primarily orange, a touch of humor that apparently is backfiring badly. No comments, so how can i tell?

I won't have a chance to vote until late in the week. I did look at some of the thumbnails - I think this time i will vote on technical merit (lots of good pics) as opposed to 'meets challenge' unless something is obviously off base.

I'm all for it's not about getting a ribbon, it's about learning, but here's my rub. In the Parallel challenge, for instance, I got about 11 comments, and none had any suggestions to improve my picture. I don't mind finishing with a 5.0 something, but couldn't a few of the people who scored it a 1 (2 votes), a 2 (8 votes), a 3 (26 votes) or a 4 (57 votes) have said SOMETHING about how it was substandard or how it could be improved?

Just had a very similar chat with my boyfriend about this (we are both DP challengers). I have been feeling downhearted as my first entry to a challenge did relatively well and the next 3 I've enterd have just gone downhill. I have to admit a low score does make me feel bad, but I see what does well and hopefully learn from those pictures.

Also a good learning point are the comments. Some are very helpful indeed as to how I could have made the same shot a lot better. However I apologise to all those I make comments for - I still don't feel that I can make constructive technical criticism on pictures when my own don't score brilliantly!!!! :) However for the orange challenge I have commented when to me the pic didn't fit the challenge.

I think self critique is good, if I score badly I can always see why (well 99% of the time) be it a substandard image that I submitted for submissions sake, or a photo that I really like and have tried to get it into the challenge in some obscure way.

For those that complain they are not learning because people don't critique, well I feel that they are on the wrong site, this is firstly a site for a weekly photography challenge, the challenge to win a blue ribbon I guess. However it does offer great learning experiences for everyone involved, but that doesn't mean it's a given to receive great critique just because you submitted a picture. If you do I see it as a bonus not as something one posted for.

I would suggest looking back through the archives and seeing the type of image that come in the top 10, then look at your own images and see what is obviously different about them. Then try to emulate the focus, composition, exposure techniques and enter a test shot.

Jonpink, methinks you hit the proverbial nail on the head. Comments are nice, and - yes - it would be wonderful if everyone who votes very low or very high would state why (I, for one, think they should). However, the learning comes from practicing and emulating the techniques and creativity shown by the ribbon winners.

I was pretty hopeful yesterday before getting to sleep. I had over 5 with 25 votes. Now it's dropped to this:

Votes: 60
Avg Vote: 4.7333
Comments: 4

I think I know what I did wrong though. I'm learning. The few comments I have confirm what I thought would go wrong, unfortunatly!
03/24/2004 10:54:36 AM · #23
I thought I too might fair well. wrong!! 60 votes, 4.450, 2 comments. Oh well.
03/24/2004 11:17:33 AM · #24
I'm in the same boat. I thought my entry would be in the 6's optimistically, high 5's at worst. I am now sitting at 4.9 with 65 votes and only one comment, which is possitive. Someone please tell me why you don't like it!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Update: I now have 66 votes and 4.85. Someone just gave me a 1 and left no comment. The primary subject is orange, it's sharp and well focused, composed nicely, vibrant, yet it get's a 1. If only they would tell me why. WAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Oh well.

Oh well, 8 more votes and still dropping!

People are clearly voting under 5 on my submissions.. on my voting standards, 1 is completely missed out, a 2 when it's missed but we see an effort, 3 is a decent shot that doesn't meet the challenge at all (no orange at all in the picture), 4 is a picture that somewhat meets the challenge but not very well done (out of focus for example)... that what I expected to score in the 5-6 range. I think I didn't do that bad!

I guess other people see that differently.
