This is from a great shoot that I did with Grace. She came up with the outfit and I handed her the toy gun. I waffled over whether or not to submit the color. The rest are here:

Looking back on this after having reached the "Film Noir" section of a film studies class, this is even better imho. Definitely a 'femme fatale'

Good use of props here. I like the background and the toning, as well.

Like the softenss and tones, the pose and the model. I am not happy with the cropping off the top of her head much. Other than that, great!

I like the use of B/W. Makes this photo very effective. The only thing I can see is a little bit of processing faults over her right shoulder. Does not take away from my over all feeling. Nice work! 8

Could possibly be a bit more noir and still leave her a platinum blonde ... although it often seems like a lot of DPC people have their monitors set too dark.

this is very Mag-esque...nice toning as always, great lighting and sharpness as always. subject matter is a little contrived, but chicks with guns scare me a little so I'll keep my vote up nice and high. nice work.

One of my favorite "portrait" shots in the challenge. Great job setting the "mood" with the tone and the contrasting "softness" of the scene and the "power" of the pistol.

I love this image... such style and pizazz. Gorgeous tones, very glamourous and retro. One of my top picks. :o)

I love the soft focus in this shot. Very nice feeling of noir. I was watching The Shadow with Alec Baldwin the other night. Made me think of this shot. It's not 1930s, but it does evoke the mood. 10

Love the classic look.. she looks too sweet to be holding the gun dangerously, though :)

Very good picture, there is some glow around her arms in the darker areas.
Great exposure, eyes a bit too much looking to her left.

Bond? Great picture. Straight from a film. Not sure about the chain around her neck, but still well done. 9.

A beautiful blonde with a gun, who can resist that? This is top quality all over. Good composition and lighting, the tonal range in the hair is fantastic. The ayes and the expression on the models face is priceless. She doesn't need a gun to get full control over me. -9

Its such a nice shot except for the 'gun'. It looks like a stapel gun to me. Some of the guns I've seen on the sight that look like pieces of art & if the gun she was holding looked as fine as she does I would have voted it up a point.

Great shot, but unfortunately my first thought was that her vest looks like a toilet rug. The texture is probably a bit too fuzzy for the sort of glowing soft focus effect you employed for this shot. I might also have put the end of the gun barrel in the center of the circle of light on the background, rather than have it end on the edge of her skin.
10/06/2004 03:35:07 PM
Not sure the "Astroturf" appearing vest & chain do much for me here, but this is a stunning image! Wonderful tone used.
Well Done! ((8))

I wish the background was solid black. I like her hair reflection - she really looks like a movie star. her left arm looks pixelated, probably "thanks" to compression.

7. Flawless 'hollywood' capture. I wish she had a bit more expression...perhaps more 'sex' in the eye but, technically, the shot is spot-on.

soft, shiny and dangerous. the light is brilliant, the detail is stunning, (the freckles on the shoulder) And the gun is phallic and the expression is perfect. this is a masterpiece. This is a 10. This is done very very well.

Nice use of black and white or sepia, I can't tell on my monitor but it looks good 8

10/05/2004 03:34:16 PM
This is competent, but too soft for me. She's pretty but the pose is a bit awkward - the gun slices through her shoulder severing the continuity of her form. Other than that I'm not sure what to be thinking unless I refer to the title. You've kind of achieved your aim with that film noir look but she does look a modern-day girl, and it's still not quite creative or perfect enough.

The soft lighting is a great contrast to the hard metal of the gun. I like the extra negative space on the right, it makes me wonder what she's looking at.

Well printed - the soft lighting is superb. The dark areas surround her hair really make the blonde shine. I don't like the white square on the gun - it gets too much attention.

Nice image. Good lighting (seems like a pro setup and BG). Soft focus feel is good on this photo. I don't like the outfit and props. Not my style. But hey!, That's just me.

Nice soft focus and B & W is a natural here. I have looked at this shot umpteen times since the challenge started and something just doesn't click for me. I can't quite put my finger on it. It feels off balance somehow. Maybe because everything leads to the right and there is nothing but blankness in the photo. I know that we have to understand that there is something there out of the frame but it feels off to me. Excellent shot however!
10/04/2004 10:58:44 AM
great lighting and composition. She doesn't look the type, and should be told to be careful, it might go off. 7
10/04/2004 01:35:13 AM
Wow, this is a great photo! Soft focus really makes the picture in this case. B/W gives it a retro feel about it which I like. However, her facial expression, although nothing really wrong with it from a technical standpoint, doesn't really fit the fact she's wielding a gun. 8

How fun! The look, the soft focus around the girl, the clairity on the gun, so perfect, the black and white works so well, just a slightly tighter crop on the right, just a touch would make it beyond perfect. A 10

10/03/2004 04:53:10 PM
hahaha, great shot! Love the expression on her face, and the softness of her features is such a great contrast to the weapon in her hand... The necklace is a bit too "big" for this shot, imo...I'd've liked to see something more simple, so as not to distract from her face and hair, which really should take center stage here. Also, the smoke like "puff" on the right looks too much like it could be post-gunshot, but then also like it could be a background flaw...regardless of all that, it's a great shot, and she's a great model! Thank you!

Technically a perfect image, but it fails to touch me. I find the smoothness of the hair and skin totally unfitting with the gun, it feels out of place (or maybe I should watch a few more film noir). I would expect more grain and maybe harh light.
10/03/2004 07:58:05 AM
Very well lit, but the soft focus distracts a little.
10/03/2004 07:33:40 AM
Wow very good - almost 50's kind of feel to this shot. I like the harsh light and soft Vaseline effect.

Very nice

I would have cropped out the left side making her look towards the negative space on the right. Great lighting and use of soft focus.
10/02/2004 04:54:29 PM
Good nostalgic shot here. The smooth, smokey feel really adds that little something to the shot! Only gripe is that the part of the gun she's holding looks like it's reflecting the light a little too much. Just me being picky though!Well done! 9

fun lighting. has a George Hurrel, old Hollywood look to it. I'm not creazy about the way she is holding the gun. It looks forced and her hands are cut off in the bottom of the frame. Also, on my monitor, there is considerable banding in the lighting gradient on the background with a big visible blob at the brightest point that lines up with the gun barrel. The resulting effect, to me looks a little off because it seems that she should be looking at that spot rather than off to the side as she is. I will look at this on another monitor, but as this was my initial impression, it will be hard to overcome.

This is a glamour shot which is very well done with great attention to detail. The sepia treatment is great and the zone representation is on the money. Cute model, playful pose and great outfit and props. Bumping up.

very nice photo, i love the soft blur on the image and believe it does really enhance the image over all, my only issue with this photo is the light patch just over the shoulder on the right hand side... it comes up as a polarised area and draws attention away from the subject... IMHO i would have liked to see that area the same consistant darkness as the rest of the image however this is one gr8 photo overall!

Gorgeous Femme fatale ! Lighting and tonality is exceptional and portrays well this film genre. I love the look on her face. I just wish the gun was all one tone as the bright spot just above the trigger is distracting, but this is really minor in a really exceptional photograph. 10

Incredible photography. She is so clear! I love the cepia tones. And she is beautiful. I gave it a 7 though, just because the concept of the chains and a gun don't appeal to me enough to make it an 8 or 9 picture for me.

The portrait makes her look like one of the classy stars from the 30s and 40s. My only problem is the carpet shirt and the chain around her neck. 6
10/01/2004 03:47:37 PM
All in all this is a vrey good shot. It is sharp and soft at the same time and the tonal range is great. Some might complain about the hot spot in the hair but I don't find it distracting. There are a couple things that, to me, lack to make this photo a ten. 1- if this is role-play then she would need a different wardrobe to fit the character. 2- her expression lacks conviction to create the proper mood set forth with the gun.

Good job!

Soft focus, costuming, lighting, and color tone work together wonderfully here to convey period. The contrast effectively pulls attention directly to your model's eyes, which follows on to take in her whole mischievious expression. Soft skin tones, good exposure, and compositional balance have me wondering what exactly she's looking at. My only issue lies with the chain... it seems a little heavy and anachronistic.

OK, I keep looking at this shot. It's really attractive. It's very good. One thing bothers me though, she looks so "modern" and happy - in my mind the noir girls all looked rather serious, or intense. I also don't think they had that kind of fabric in noir times (her tank top) :) I guess this is a "modern noir". It's a lovely shot.

This is a great shot and definately have the film noir feel to it. The way she is looking off screen is very effective, and the soft focus, although slightly excessive in my opinion, works really well. I think the whites of the eyes should be slightly lightened too. 8
