Never was very good with still lifes in art classes. Not expecting much out of this, though I do like it.

post: well this is a happy ending to an otherwise grueling weekend. Thanks!

430EX shooting into an umbrella on the left. Stuff sitting on the dining room table, lights out in the room except for a small lamp dialed up to let me focus.

I spent half an hour lighting the candle, blowing it out and clicking off a few shots - repeat ad nauseum. Waste of time and the candle didn't make 'nice' smoke anyway. Dug around and broke off a piece of an incense stick. Dipped one end in the hot wax of the candle and stuck it to the table behind the candle. Constant smoke at that point, so more a matter of blowing at it and just generally waiting for a decent looking shape to form.

One of the best photos I have ever seen!

I liked the intensity of light on the candle and pot. At first thought I was wondering how you got the smoke on the candle ??
The incense stick is an amazing idea! Looks very natural!!

CONGRATS!!

On first glance simple yet appealing, but the more one looks the more one sees; the textures, shadows, reflections, pattern of smoke...
The composition and lighting are exquisite :)

I love this photo! The pots seem to almost be 'oooh'ing at the candle. And the fact the smoke seems to be saying 'good' is ridiculously cool.

There is a lovely atmosphere to this image and the lighting is equally as good, This is a well thought of image and the whisps of smoke add to it greatly. The texture on the pots is tangible.

Really clever idea. I like the side lighting and the fade into black on the right. I would suggest if you ever want to try this again, to use a darker, more textured candle to match up with the largest urn (?) in the back to help bring the whole image together. Sorry, can't vote!

simple and clean. well composed, especially like that there is lot of space around the candle while the vases are close together, leads the view directly to the smoke.
