THis reminds me of a scene from a move - Lord of the Rings in specific! Wonderful job! Excellent editing.

Beauiful....!!

Re: Gordon's post:

While I agree with G's evaluation and general premise, I find myself less eager to see an 'actor entering the stage'. To me, the scene provides several strong anchors already: the leading rock path as well as the numerous boulders strewn in the grass on the right of the image (foreground), the boulders delimiting the foreground.

I can derive considerable satisfaction from the emptiness of this scene, really. The absence of people, particularly, suggests (to me) a modest sanctum for dissociation ('modest' because the path is so obviously man-made).

I'd rather have a chair, cello or another 'object' in this setting than another 'one of us' in a gortex jacket, but I also and strongly feel that the image is complete and utterly enjoyable as is.

Awesome shot! I would love to hike this area. I would like to know what you did do to the picture if any?
04/02/2004 12:58:53 AM
Like many of your shots, Jon, this is brooding and moody and wonderful. Congratulations on the ribbon! Really nifty stuff!
04/01/2004 12:26:09 PM
Jon - some thoughts - feel free to ignore them :)

First, I think this is a great shot as is. I'm just trying to think how to take it up a notch. I see a lot of good shots (this is not directed at you so much any more, but please indulge me) that could be considered great stages. The set design is perfect, the scene is set - but it needs the actor to arrive. This strikes me as one of those shots. Imaging a person walking off into the distance there, maybe a red rain jacket on, walking away from the camera, just passing over the near ridge, heading towards that mountain.

I'm increasingly seeing these sorts of opportunities where something could be added to really make the shot sing - in this case it would have really hit home on the 'country walking' theme too.

Something to maybe consider.

Great shot mista! You certainly have a good eye.

JP
I have come back several times to look at this shot.
I really like this, it's magnetic. Just wonderful.
03/30/2004 08:56:04 PM
Oh, what a awesome photo! I wonder if I've walked along this path! What memories this has brought back to me!

03/30/2004 01:56:23 PM
This is an awesome photograph. Congrates!
03/30/2004 01:50:33 PM
Oh, I just saw this now!! What a beautiful picture. Congratulations!!!

Really nice shot, Jon. Looks like you've done it again! Well done!!
03/29/2004 05:18:04 PM
Well done Jon - that's a great scene, well observed and shot. Post processed sky suits it well (if a little harsh) but this would accommodate a masthead beautifully! ; )
03/29/2004 09:29:09 AM
Congrats Jon on well deserved ribbon!
03/29/2004 08:38:38 AM
Congrats - this was one of my 10s from voting - really good feel with the colours
03/29/2004 07:18:44 AM
This is a great pic! In my top! Well deserved ribbon!
03/29/2004 04:26:49 AM
Well done Jon,the lighting worked for you this time :)

Great image..congrats.

Thanks for comments - the blue remains elusive ;)

Cbeller & Jmsetzler - I tried it in B&W, that was the first thing I did, but the light is so flat with low cloud, and there isn't that much shape or texture here to bring out, so I went with a cold color feel.
03/29/2004 01:30:39 AM
Cool shot Jon - and another ribbon in a really competitive challenge - well done mate. The only slightly annoying thing about this shot is that I was supposed to be going to wales this week, but something, as ever, came up :-(. Good work.

Alright! My predictions were correct. Congrats on the well deserved ribbon.
03/29/2004 01:01:10 AM
Jon, this was one of my favorite photos in the challenge, but I never got around to commenting on much this week. This is an excellent photo. I love the angry feel of the clouds. The color here is nice but I'm wondering if you have experimented with a slightly contrasty and grainy b/w feel for this one...

Nice work :)
03/29/2004 12:22:19 AM
Nice shot, Jon. Kind of surprised it's in color. :)
03/29/2004 12:09:21 AM
Congrats on the ribbon. Excellent shot!

Beautifully observed and composed. Ideal for a magazine cover. Well done. 10
03/27/2004 05:55:27 PM
I think we would rather use this for our Trail Magazine in that there does not appear to be anyone walking in your image. Otherwise an excellent shot!
03/27/2004 12:20:22 PM
Very atsmopheric image, love the colours and the dof is excellent
03/27/2004 12:19:35 AM
Only the flat lighting kept this out of my top 3 picks. It's just a little dreary- one ray of sunlight and you'd have a 10. Beautiful work!
03/26/2004 09:11:04 PM
I really like the feel of this pic. Would make a lovely magazine cover . 10 Jacko.
03/26/2004 01:50:10 AM
amazing shot. 10
03/25/2004 08:33:52 PM
Outstanding, this shot is amazing. Wonderful angle in which to shoot this shot, the upward slope to the mountains background is outstanding I like this very much..can you tell? :) 10
03/25/2004 06:14:45 PM
Pretty picture and the walkway is inviting but having someone in the picture would have been even more so.
03/25/2004 03:33:04 PM
Stunning picture, good luck.
03/25/2004 08:33:13 AM
Awesome light! A great scene. A person would have added more interest.
03/25/2004 08:29:04 AM
Nice job! I really like the moody atmosphere here, Nice shot.
03/25/2004 05:46:12 AM
Absolutely stunning. Your DOF is perfect and you caputed the proper exposure, not easy in a scene like this.
03/24/2004 08:05:40 PM
Very much like the compostion. The top looks very artificially darkened, and IMO this detracts.
Just a touch more contrast in the foregound, and maybe a touch more saturation there would help to bring out the beautiful golden tones in the plants, and emphasize the contrast with the muted blue & gray of the distant peak.
03/24/2004 08:13:20 AM
Nice and good.
03/24/2004 07:07:21 AM
beautiful perspective, lovely composition and colors! 10 from me
03/23/2004 10:09:03 PM
Fantastic shot...very cool trail. Maybe a person walking would add to it...but very cool none the less.
03/23/2004 08:50:53 PM
Beautiful shot. Just enough room at the top for text. Path compososed well. 10
03/23/2004 06:19:33 PM
I have seen many but this is my fav. so far!! hope you get a ribbon!
03/23/2004 05:44:31 PM
I feel that this is just a bit dismal for the cover of a magazine that wants to promote walking. I know that I'd hesitate to start off under these conditions for fear of being caught in a storm. Apart from that, I really do like the image a lot, and scored accordingly.
03/23/2004 02:29:23 PM
I want to walk there!

This is a beautiful scene. I wish you would have shown more of the path on the left, it leaves the eye wanting to see more of it.

I would definitely see this on a magazine. 10

Good luck...
03/23/2004 01:58:32 PM
fantastic atmosphere, very inviting. room for text as well. great angle. 10
03/23/2004 03:13:17 AM
I love the atmosphere that you have captured here, more emphasis on the path I would have preffered, it's leads your eye away to the side of the picture - still a very nice photo - 8
03/22/2004 08:21:16 PM
Very moody, color-rich shot. I love the gradiated sky and mountain in background. Superb.
03/22/2004 07:13:49 PM
walk way to heaven 9
03/22/2004 07:06:49 PM
Just gorgeous !!!!!!!!
03/22/2004 03:41:24 PM
lovely shot. Where was this taken, Hoy? The space you have left for the magazine title and features text is excellent. Well done.
03/22/2004 03:31:20 PM
Nice capture, would have been nice to see the peak, but I guess you couldn't dictate the conditions, that aside could actually see this as a magazine cover.
03/22/2004 02:50:20 PM
Excellent composition. Clearly you had a magazine cover layout in mind when you framed this image. Also, the hiker's viewpoint would speak to a hiker and invite them to pick up a copy. Nicely done.
03/22/2004 09:47:06 AM
So beautiful. My top four. I like this shot very much. Hope you do well.
03/22/2004 08:48:12 AM
Excellent shot. Nice tones and colors.
03/22/2004 07:49:58 AM
Stunning! Makes me want to be there.
03/22/2004 07:01:00 AM
I would really love to walk here! Reminds me of Norwegian mountains. Well composed, and good colours.
03/22/2004 06:58:25 AM
beautiful shot but the black at the top is a little wrong I feel, did you fade that in or was it natural? It would have been a lot nicer if the sky blue had extended to the top
03/22/2004 06:20:56 AM
Captures the mood well..I was hoping to do something similar but wasn`t brave enough to face the rotten weather....8
03/22/2004 01:11:08 AM
This should win a ribbon if not for the fact that it's one of the best photos in the challenge but that you took the time to consciously make the photo the correct orientation to be a cover photo and edited in room for the title. It was refreshing seeing someone using their brain. 10
03/22/2004 12:55:07 AM
Amazing. Love the color and lighting on this.
03/22/2004 12:08:47 AM
Great image, but the filtration looks a little strong...even if its not filtered. Either way, though, I like it very much.
03/22/2004 12:08:25 AM
The sky gradient looks fake.
