Some people were thinking that sticking something on a branch makes the picture more about that something than the branch. This shot was about the combination of the two.

About two years ago, I got a shot of a house finch on a flowering tree, and they matched perfectly. I'd wanted to recreate that shot for quite awhile. Luckily, the branch had just started blooming when the challenge started. There is no color correction in this shot -- the flowers and the bird really do match perfectly!

There were a number of shots that I considered for the challenge.

I love this one, but I thought it wouldn't be as universal as the house finch.


I was pretty sure that people would think this one was about the bird. What fascinated me about it, was how big branches are and how little their feet are!

Congratulations Wendy! Two Team Suckers win ribbons in one contest, I wonder if that'll ever happen again! The matching reds are beautiful, this was my highest rated image (I have to admit I only got through about 25% but still).

WOOT! Way to go Wendy! Now all you have to do is use the cyan filter and you have a bluebird ;-) Congrats!

PS glad you id'd this bird, I thought I had a rose-breasted grosbeak at my feeder. I now know it's a house finch, thanks to your lovely shot :-)

I disagree completely with anyone who suggests the bird detracts from the branch as a subject in this photo. They really do match perfectly, and so this becomes a story about the bird being at home in and a natural extension of the branch. Beautiful photo!

Nice! Ordinarily I don't like to keep so much branch in a bird shot, but really this is a bird in a branch shot so it's all good ;-) Actually makes for a fun composition that I like more the longer I look at it.

Love this picture :-) The branch in itself is very colorful and visually pleasing on its own. Then the bird seals the deal!
One of my top 5 for sure (although granted I haven't quite looked through all entire yet :-P)
