Romantic Sand Gesture

It doesn't feel like much effort was spent on this image. If you had found an interesting angle to shoot this from or done something noteworthy with the DoF I'd be more inclined to like it. As it is, this just feels like a quick snapshot. Adding some artifact of human presence would help to create a more personal connection to the viewer. As currently composed it feels about as personal as an ATM wishing me a nice day.

This flower is well shot; the beads of water are a nice touch. Boosting the saturation of the green somewhat would probably have complemented the color of the flower. I would have preferred to see the DoF centered a little better; it seems like it's on the dew drops in the center of the frame, which is one of the less interesting portions of the flower. On most cameras you can press the shutter button down half-way to get the focus to lock, then re-compose to move that area to some uncentered location. Flower shots are so common that they tend to fare rather poorly with the voters; good luck on this one.

The fisheye feel of this image is distracting and seems to compete too much with the intended subject. A shallower DoF would have helped to drop a lot of the clutter out of the background.

It looks like you over-sharpened this to make up for poor focus in the original.

The odd placement and intensity of the light make this feel far too staged to work.

I don't see any clear connection between the silhouettes of the people and the gulls, nor any connection to the challenge topic. The exposure is good, I just can't see what you're trying to communicate here.

The light is a little flat and the colors are rather subdued. If you were going for a softer look, softer focus would have helped to further emphasize the theme.

One Fleeting Moment...3rd Place
by librodo

Comment:
This looks like one of librodo's shots. The symbolic connotations of the girl's pose really add a lot to this already strong image. The texture of the lace and wings make the image look slightly over-sharpened. The high-key lighting has washed out a lot of the tonal detail on her face (the symbolic differences between the lighting techniques would have been interesting too; making the light fade from light on one side to dark on the other would have been interesting as well, regardless of which side was lighter). Personally I'd have rather seen a lower-key version with more detail in her face. The lighting is a touch flatter than I'd like. Having said that, this is still my top pick for the ribbon in this challenge. Nicely done.

If not for the red light I wouldn't have noticed that this is a long exposure of a skyline. Nice idea, but without the title it doesn't seem to relate very strongly to the challenge topic.

Comment:
The relationship to the challenge topic is severely understated, and the bilk of the image is dedicated to uninteresting visual noise. Is this guy trying to find Chit's rake?
