A very opportune capture - no surprise that this makes a good score.

I reckon, in my humble opinion, that a challenge like this calls for a really defined subject with a really thrown-out background, or focus on a very specific, slim, area. The background just isn't far enough out of focus, and is full of quite a few distracting elements. So what you've got is a Shallow Depth of Field challenge asking you to isolate a subject, where you've placed in a shot with a depth of field covering maybe 7 or 8 yards. It's just not what folk expect, so you're missing the really easy mass appeal that will get you a high score.

I wonder how this might have done in black and white (out of the camera obviously for this challenge). It seems to score averagely well, but I wonder if the vividness of it hit against the minimalist theme perhaps?

This is a great shot of the little guy. I think shallow DOF shots tend to underscore on here really.

I think for this I would have had to go one way or the other with the depth of field. Either drop down and attempt to bring the duck in to focus, or push the focus further away. As it is my eyes are drawn back and forward in an awkward manner. The general composition though is outstanding.

Great job here. The b&w conversion with the selective colour works well with the texture and level of sharpness that you have captured.

I think this is a great shot. The timing is good, and the colours are well-captured. The only thing that takes away from it in my view is the one bird top-right that is way in the foreground compared to the others in that section of the shot. Were it not for that bird I think it would be even better.
