Congratulations on the Top Ten finish, Barbara.

I like the way it turned out, the doorway's confined space makes a nice frame for the light. The building lines complement the graffiti. And the color is gorgeous. Well done.

I looked at this several times during voting, trying to figure out what to see & how to react to it. It seemed awfully flat at first, but the way it's framed added depth somehow. After rollover I went back to find out how it did & who did it. When I discovered it was you, Robert--THEN I SAW THE BOAT for the first time. Wow. Subconsciously I must be looking for boats in your work. Anyway, nicely done!

I like the way it changes when I click it open. The path seems like a bit of sky on the ground. And the trees in the sky. The enigmatic ladder. Very nice.

WOW! I still love looking at this.

A good photograph is one that I can come back to--for more of what attracted my eye the first time, & for new visual pleasures every next time. This lovely comp creates mystery & suspense, & tactile visual detail all combined in perfect harmony. The recognizable airplane wing anchors the comp in reality, giving my eye a departure point it can return to again & again. The tones, shapes, lines--all combined together perfectly. Good work.

And it was taken with the iPhone 5S! Even better!

The distracting element for me in this comp is the title. It's a mystery.

Hi Jeb! This is one of the most confusing challenges ever, to vote on at least. I couldn't find the distracting element in most of the entries. I don't see the Distracting Element in this composition. My best guess is the whatever-it-is on the right edge of the frame, but since it didn't distract my attention from the band it didn't feel like a distracting element. The composition is full of elements competing for my attention, but none of them feel like distracting elements. Maybe it was the light on the floor--to me a strong but not distracting element.

So...what was the distracting element?

BTW I like what you did in PP. Very clear light. Nice detail. Your work is getting a painterly feel to it that is quite nice & doesn't compromise the photographic nature of the shot.

Hi Christophe, congratulations on the Blue.

I think the distracting element is the white streetlights. Or maybe the white edge of the feather boa at her shoulder.

In answer to your philosophical question: this planet is a wonderfully diverse place. Each species has diversified as much as it can. The research you mention is already ongoing, with the best minds the human race has to offer hard at work on it. The best minds at other things are hard at work on those too. Humans are hard at work at everything we can think of. If I could, I would do something to change the way our children are educated, to maximize whatever each child has to offer.

For most of the life forms on this planet, life has little more to offer than staying alive long enough to reproduce. That is true of some humans, too, but not all.
