Boiled Egg and Soldiersby SoulMan1978Comment: Almost reminds me of Martin Parr; he has a photo of a proper cup of tea served in an English tea room, which works along similar lines: saturated colour, direct flash to remove all shadows, simple centred framing - lacking in pretension, just showing us the object as found, as seen. Arguably just documenting the item, letting us draw our own conclusions. He would work more simply still however - total depth of field, rather than using the focus to point the eye in this manner. People will call it a pointless snapshot, perhaps; and perhaps they're right - perhaps its the kind of thing that needs rather to be seen in a series, than as a stand alone image. |

AveryTunnelby twade1Comment: A fine image. A pity you haven't re-sized to the maximum allowed dimensions - one suspects, seeing as its 480 tall, that you might have misunderstood the allowance. The graininess is fabulous, the simplicity exemplary; and the tonality matches the mood - some, I suspect, will tell you that you need to use more of teh available dynamic range - this image has no areas anywhere near white - but I think you have made the right choice in keeping to a more muted palette. Enjoyable mysterious, too. |

Fancy That!by michael_pComment: Enjoy the massive contrast here; makes one wonder whether taking it further still, to white-out the face almost completely rather than only in certain areas might have further emphasised the fundamental black and white. |

Closed Doorsby yondermanComment: The muddling-up of the tonality of this is just too much for me - takes it out of the realm of the photographic completely I feel: if you're at liberty to re-organise the light in this way, what's the point of using your camera?
Beyond which, it has a certain compositional grace to it: I like the slight madness of obscuring the spire with that tree, and the balancing of that with the almost hyper-domestic seeming porchway. Subversive, and fun. |

zero painby lowonenergyComment: I like this: well, perhaps that's a bit strong: I like the difference of it, like that its entered here where it will of course not win. It has a certain madness of intent to it that fascinates.

Flight of Fancyby faeryComment: Something stopped me from voting this a 2 or 3 along with the rest of the 'children looking cute' shots. Along with the rest of the sentimental 'children as angels' shots. Perhaps its the simplicity of it, perhaps simply the black and white, and perhaps the sinister, catholic, threatening duplication of those ancient crosses above and behind her. As if to suggest that for all this posing in churchyards stuff, there yet might be a re-rising of an old testament God who would not look favourably on such playing in his serious environments. That, coupled with a sense of humility in this child, make for an intriguing narrative that I couldn't quite ignore.
I'm not one for the posed photograph, but the implications of this appeal to the Calvinist element of my soul, and I can't ignore that, can I? |

Aerodynamicsby pointandshootComment: Crazy. The conspiracy theorists would love it, and its indeterminate suggestions of UFOs, of the alien, and yet obvious connection with our humdrum world through the processes of photography makes this a winner for me. Simple, and yet so suggestive of so many mad scenarios. |

Wings at Restby JeniYComment: marvellous, if over-processed-looking. No doubt very saleable. I don't like the toning - seems to me that it would have impact without it, and it only pushes the viewer into a reaction (s)he ought ot have anyway with a little looking. Great visual sense though. |
