I can highly recommend the 40D. You can get great EF-S lenses for it (like the 17-55mm f/2.8), which are less expensive than their counterparts for full-frame bodies. The only downside is that you won't be able to use them on a full-frame body should you update one day (but if you have the money for a new body, you might also be able to buy new lenses. And you can sell the old ones on Ebay.).

The 50mm f/1.4 and the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS are also fascinating!

And if you go to Hawaii, don't spend all your time in Honolulu or on Maui. You want to see Kauai, in my opinion the most beautiful island with the best photo opportunities.

Good idea to choose a special kind of camera (and not simply your DSLR) and highlighting its main feature. The water flowing over the camera looks great. One of my favorites in the challenge.
