first off, I hate snakes....but anyway, yours suffers from the same thing my entry does...it seems the middle part of the body is in focus but the head is slightly out of focus

It certainly is. Good catch. Could be a little lighter and a little sharper. I'd crop off the flower/leaf above the snake.
