Nice macro, especially with such a small subject! That lens did a good job, it looks sharp where it should be, good lighting and exposure and composition. I think that the viewers want to see the fg petals and this side of the pistils (I think that's what they're called) in focus, though; it seems that oof or blurred-out bg stuff is acceptable but people just don't like oof fg elements as much.

The Coastlineby sfaliceComment by snaffles: Greetings from the Critique Club!
As already noted by a commenter, this really does draw the viewer far and away. Love the big dominant sky and the high super-white clouds, though none look bleachy, always a plus. Then the well-seen stagger of rocks/cliffs coming towards the viewer from the bottom right, and that great final wedge of red sandstone helps seal the deal by tying together the dreamy blue of the sky, the denser blue-purple of the water and the little hint of green in bottom right. Nicely done!

Red Lightby sfaliceComment by Jules1x: Greetings from the Critique Club.
My overall impressions were that I enjoyed this image. It was interesting and unique, and I liked the colors. After rollover when your explanation was revealed, it added even more for me since I was indeed curious.
The colors and lines in the blue and white I loved. I also love the concept of the birds as eyelashes. Crazy unique. The only thing I did not love was the red lights - I found myself wishing they were either sharper or much less sharp. (I am not sure I can explain why, and I didn't distract from my overall enjoyment of the image, but for some reason I kept wanting to see the lines similar to in the white and blue go throughout the red too. But that's probably just weird me.)
Definitely met the challenge. If I had to guess on why your overall score is a bit lower than I might have expected, most of the highest scores were pretty grounded in being 'photo realistic' with either very real seeming scenes or portraits with a bit of a twist. There was some discussion during voting where some folks implied they felt photo-realistic was critical to their voting. I apparently love non-photorealistic images, but such images may end up with lower scores.

Red Lightby sfaliceComment by pixelpig: Simple, & effective & GORGEOUS color abstract. Sometimes, after one flip it's done.
[ETA] I missed the twirl, which is cool, as the effect doesn't dominate the comp. And I like the idea of combining images. Thanks for the inspiration!
