If there were any more dark/stark foreground I might have kept in just a bit more for contrast; I like the overall concept..

Nice idea! Have you tried doing this one as a portrait format so that you don't have quite as much dark on either side?

I'd have cropped the bottom of this shot slightly, so that the step was out of sight, giving a clearer shade/sunlight transition (as well as the gateway transition).
