ButterFlyby MelTech1Comment by 7Stringer: I like the framing, but the colors seem a little muted and you expect vibrancy from this kind of scene. |

ButterFlyby MelTech1Comment by glad2badad: This is a tough one to catch. The butterfly having it's wings nearly closed makes it almost impossible to retain detail unless you have a very deep aperture. But then you'd have to have a very high shutter speed to stop the motion. What to do...what to do. ;^) I also wonder if instead of a square crop (I'm assuming, maybe incorrectly, that this was in landscape orientation originally), if you had taken just a bit more off the left and right to give it more of a portrait orientation, what that would have looked like. Just a thought. All of the above is JMO of course. Good luck in the challenge. |

ButterFlyby MelTech1Comment by Skip: this is a tough shot, especially the way those things fly. even though you have caught this one in flight, the positioning doesn't really do much for the composition. this time of day leaves the colors so washed that you might have done well to consider a bw conversion. |

ButterFlyby MelTech1Comment by Melethia: Pretty good shot considering how hard it is to catch these guys in flight! Would have been better if he'd been a bit more in focus and not quite so close to the top of the frame. |

ButterFlyby MelTech1Comment by flip89: Seldom you see this, with the butterfly flying, but it could have been more defined. Nice try though. Really. 7. |

Challenge
- Relevant to the Challenge? Yes, but aesthetically it leaves me wanting more.
- Is subject unique (vs. unoriginal or rehashed)? Most definitely.
Compostion
- Good or Bad? How can it be fixed? There are two things that draw attention away from the subject (smoke stack) the pipes and mechanicals below the stack and the water tower on the edge of the image. Any time you have a complex pattern (pipes) or an object on an edge it' will draw the attention away from your subject. Simplify your composition here. Rotate your stack to be verticle.
- Good use of Depth of Field? Yes
- Good focus? Yes
Lighting
- Good use of light? Yes. I like the light rounding the edge of the stack.
Aesthetics/Artistic Appeal:
- Colors and ContrastI like the red of the bricks, but the sky looks odd (maybe it's just my monitor.)
- Sharpness. Good.
- What is my reaction or feelings? I think this would have done better in the Industrial Challenge than Architecture. With some work it could be a great image. |

LUCKY STRIKE SMOKESTACKby MelTech1Comment by Rikki: I hope the stack doesn't lean as much as this image shows. I think this would have been highly effective had the smokestack been located in one of the thirds using ROTs and the perspective corrected using PS. |
