Comment by Rikki:
Greetings from the Critique Club

My first impression of this image is that it's blurry and the lighting is harsh. There are a few things that hurt this image aside from the fact that it isn't in focus. They are composition, subject and DOF used. The lighting here is too bright as seen in the blown highlights on the fly's wings. A fly in itself is not a bad subject to begin with but when it's shot in full macro that is. An ordinary fly composed this way just seems a run of the mill image that seemed like it was just taken for the sake of entering a shot. I think improvement lies in the way the fly is presented. The violet petal on the right doesn't add to the overall composition. I do like the fact that the textures are present and that the leaf shows the fine "hairs" iof you will. The color of the subject is great and adds interest to an overall green hue of the image. While the violet adds a falir of color, it doesn't add much to the composition.

I hope you see this as a way to improve your image and not as a critique to pull you down. You have some great images in your portfolio and since this is your first try at bugs, I would suggest practicing more so that you can improve on your mistakes. If you can catch the fly, so much the better so that you can position him for a better view.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about shooting macros. Although I have no experience shooting bugs, I do have some interesting macro shots that I can share details with you. Here's looking forward to more images from you Deborah ;)

Cheers,

Rikki

The fact that it's "daily" means it's "everyday" which doesn't sound interesting, and when the topic is poultry, you need it to be as intereting as possible. The image, though its composition is nice, doesn't tell me why I should be interested in poultry either.
