There is a growing trend to place people or (or dogs or cows) in corners of photos of natural places to 'spruce them up a bit' , 'you know, add interest.' While indisputably they can provide a focal point and even a sense of scale they do frequently ruin the shot IMO. If it is to be in this frame, the four legged animal is at a perfect place in the frame. But if the photo is about that being, then we are just a tad too far away. On the other hand if the photo is about that animal's environment, then we are very much too close - the animal should be out of site. Why do I go on about it? I like the sand and the water. I like the sky in its pale tones and even the blown-out clouds. I believe that were the animal removed, there would be more exposure space for the sand and sky and their details could be expressed.

What's the dog doing there? Your title might be read to imply that that is god examining his creation. I find this interpretation vaguely amusing, particularly because of the intensity with which the dog seems to be examining the ground. Almost as if to say, "Dang! I missed a spot!"
