Black and White Bloomby

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.
First Impression - the most important one:
Wow ... what an interesting way to view a flower.
Composition:
This seems ok, I went out and did a search on flowe photography to have a look at what really works ... and found that the majority of pictures I found did not have this amount of negative space around them ... I was wondering how it would look as a single flower with a tighter crop - this would also help in placing the flower within the rule of thirds a little more.
Subject:
Meets the challenge well ... but I could not really tell until I saw the photographers comments and am wondering if using a light defuser gave voters confusion in their voting.
Technical (Colour and light):
the edges of the flower appear sharp and in focus, but the center appears to be a little on the soft side .. I am not sure if you used manual focus or auto focus ... but it would be that the apperture was a little too narrow or that the camera was focused on the edge o the petal.
To grow its vote?:
I think trying different crops would help ... that is not saying this isn't a beautiful shot in itself. Also, black and white has worked .. but does the flower have more impact from the single light source in the colour shot?
Summary:
This is a fantastic first entry .. I see great things in your future.
