Sleeping Kingby OmanOtterComment by OmanOtter: Originally posted by patio127: you got really close- were you in a vehicle ? So exciting , Sean ! Nice shot . |
Patio: Thanks. No, I wasn't in a vehicle. This shot, and the one of the lioness in the afternoon -- and all my properly-lit shots of lions -- were taken of lions in a fenced enclosure at a lion rescue facility where they keep lions that can't be released into the wild. So, I'm standing in a watch tower here looking over the fence. I have a bunch of other pictures of lions -- the lion at night picture and the lion eating a giraffe picture and several more that I will post later that were either taken at night or in very poor light. Those pictures were in the wild. So, unfortunately, the only time I saw lions during the day in good lighting conditions was the day I went to the lion rescue facility. All my wild lions were at night, in bad lighting, or at a great distance. |

Thanks Patio! Yes, we went to South Africa for two weeks vacation -- 1 week in Capetown and 1 at Pilansburg National Park (where this was taken). Pilansburg is an extinct volcano. That's where we went on game drives. It was great! |

Lion Eats Giraffeby OmanOtterComment by OmanOtter: Originally posted by macrothing: Originally posted by OmanOtter: The giraffe broke its neck in a fall. A pride of 11 lions found it and claimed it for themselves. This is about 24 hours after the lions initially found it -- lot's of meat left. Early on a rainy morning, so not good light. |
Wow. Did you happen to see the giraffe fall or someone told you? (will check back 'later' to see if you include in your comments. As for the image, shame it cannot be 'rescued' to show more detail. Is the lion(ess?) walking on it? (will check back later) |
Hi. I didn't see it; a guide told me that some other guides reported having found the giraffe still alive but with a broken neck. They wanted to help; but there was nothing you could do for a giraffe with a broken neck, so they left it to die. Personally, I would have shot the giraffe to put it out of its misery. Yes, the lion is walking on the giraffe. |
