on camera flash produces harsh shadows and makes the image look flat. If you can use light from side, it would be better

Welcome to DPC. Glad to see you parcipating to regularly. It's the best way to learn!

This image has been well critiqued all ready. If you follow taterbug's advice you will have an excellent image when you are done. (And it doesn't hurt to redo a Challenge entry, if you think you can do it better.)

I'll add just one more comment about your image. (well, maybe two). The title is terrific! Then, if it was mine, I'd be a bit more careful in the carving of the symbol. Because it is the star of the show, it should be absolutely beautiful with sure & true knife lines.
