Comment by Mark-A:
Quite a bit too dark and the whole of the middle of the image is completely lost to shadows which may limit the amount of time viewers will want to look at this shot.

Comment by Lydia:
this seems too dark to me to be really interesting. I need to see the line where the water meets the real life, I think.

The photo for me is mixed. I like the concept, but do not feel any part of it jumps out at me. While the result is colorful, none of the bands of colors stands out to draw your eye. The colors all seem a little random, perhaps some more symeetry would have helped. The highlights on the glass and bottem of the orange part detract a bit. I agree with the prior comment about changing to a horizontal crop would have made a huge difference. BTW finishing in the top half of any DPC challenge is always a good thing!

One thing to take away is that your 5 commenters LOVED it, since they averaged 8.0 and you got a favorite. I can suggest a few things that would make me like it more, though.

First is the composition. The curves seem to sweep upward to me, so I'd try it as a vertical shot instead of horizontal. That'd mean cropping in on the sides, which would also have the benefit of removing a lot of the dead black space in the lower corners.

I'd also try it cropping off some of the bottom, to move the glass toward the bottom of the shot. Often, with a backlit glass, the stem adds to the beauty. But here, it's basically black.

Same goes for the liquid in the glass. It's just a big black triangle, whereas the impact of this shot comes from the colorful curves.

Finally, and this is a general point about DPC, sharp sharp sharp does better than blurred. A smaller aperture would give you deeper depth of field, allowing you to have the full rim in focus.

Overall, it's a pretty shot, and with more practice, the technicals will come. Just keeping being creative! :)
