Hi There, not sure whose this is, but the site council mentioned you were offended by the comment I made...I am sorry if you were as I am not an offensive person, and to offend you would be the last thing on my mind. What I said I said with my tongue in my cheek and with a dose of humour...It looks like a snapshot from the perspective of someone who has been sitting at the bar for a long time with a drink...just a joke, no ill will intended.

But let me critique this properly...it seems like a snapshot taken in a bar rather than a well thought out image. The composition cramped...I don't know exactly what to look at as there is no obvious feature...it's a very point and shoot kind of image with no real creativity. You entered this in a free study challenge - a best of May 2008 challenge, and the quality of images is very high as people enter their best work. The question I ask, and I ask this not judging you: is this your best work? Surely you might be more creative than this...Anyone could take a snap like this.

As to the technical aspects...the focus seems to be on the front wine bottle rendering most of the image soft and out of focus. It seems you had the flash fire and so the light seems harsh in the foreground, also there is a colour cast over the image.

I would suggest that you look through the top 30 or 40 images in each challenge and see the quality and creativity and hard work that is required to do well in challenges, then, use some creativity and thought and you will succeed in getting improvement in your photography.

This is the reason I said that I didn't know why you entered this. It looks like a snapshot while drinking at the bar. DPC is about challenge, striving, looking hard to find something that will really pop or say something...this is in my opinion, not one of those shots.

Once again, I am sorry you were offended...but what I have written above is the honest way I feel about this image.

Kind Regards,

Enzo hotpasta

To me that image lacks a theme and is out of focus.

Poor focus, both boy and dog ate blurry. The dog's leg and half the boy are cut off. Really very much a snapshot.

The composition is OK for this - looks to be a display in a town center somewhere? Also looks to have been handheld at low shutter creating some motion blur which takes away from the impact. I don't always carry a tripod either, but what you can do is find an immovable object - a bench or a pillar or something - and use the self-timer function to take the shot.

Looks like you have some blur from a slow shutter speed. I'm afraid that hurts it quite a bit.
