I really like this, although I think you may have cropped a little close to Pat's head. Was there any part of his hat showing?

DOF - I like it on the whole, although I'm guessing you shot wide open due to Roy's lighting design - some of the sacking' focus is off.

Contrast - has this been boosted? I wonder whether you could have gone a notch further - I like the burnout on his teeth and his face but IMO possibly a little more?

I really like the conversion to sepia, and I'm left wondering whether some grain would add to this quite gritty image?

Cracking shot!

NIce effect. Might be my monitor but the left pic looks slightly too soft focus.

Thanks to all for the advice and nice comments. For those that are wondering, the whole picture was made from a box of (ship) matches, some superglue, a lighter and the flashlight on my mobile phone.

I started this at 10pm and submitted the photo at 3am GMT. The model took about 3 hours. The biggest trouble was getting the superglue to attach the matchsticks together!

Oh yeah. And I am SO chuffed with the 21st place! Thanks.

Good pose and nice expression , like the catchlights in the eyes.

There is an odd 'halo' particularly evident by the left shoulder, but apparent all the way round the subject, that I find very distracting. I am also not sure if the same halo is affecting the ear, or if that is being affected by DoF.

I am also a little distracted by the bg. I have a good idea it's blinds, but it keeps drawing my eye away from the subject. The composition could also work a little better if it was slightly more off-centre.

The vest is a little unfortunate that it has become burnt out. - It keeps dragging my eye away from his face and saying 'whoa! HIGHlights!' As It's not gonna be a submission, could you photoshop the level of the vest down a bit?

I really like the reflections in the glasses. With the catchlights they make him seem a little less intimidating.
I think I would have prefered to see more of the tattoo on the left arm, although I am not sure whether doing that and getting the head at the same angle to cover the face as well as you have would result in an awkward pose.

All in, I think this is a good shot. It would have probably got a 6 or 7 from me, caused by the bg, that the lighting feels a bit flat (I realise in the circumstances there is probably very little you could do about that), and the composition.

Oh and also, well done. I actually hate doing portraits!
