At first I had planned to have the thermometer in the upper third with the light shining through making a coloured shadow. After a bit of experimentation, I took this shot without a tripod from an overhead angle so that the coloured shadows were restricted to behind the glass itself.
I did think of coming in closer and reducing the white space, but I wanted to show the range of colours from red to blue.
This was photographed outside with just bright sunlight.
I used unsharp mask on the final image and tweaked the levels a little to even out the white background, though at the expense of losing a little detail in the white highlights. Message edited by author 2003-04-15 15:31:18. |
| 03/18/2003 07:20:44 PM | Egg on Edgeby gerardComment: Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the egg has water on it. I was trying to give the impression it was breaking into a sweat while balanced precariously on the edge of the basket. The water would have looked better had it formed beads - I did try, but it didn't work too well. |

I think while the red glow in the background adds some warmth, the backdrop would look better if it was out of focus, slightly sharper on the shakers themselves, and a little more focus on the grains of salt in the foreground. |
| 11/04/2002 04:44:00 PM | Vanishing Dollsby gerardComment: Thanks for the comments and advice. I'm sure most people figured out that this was a multi exposure, with 5 exposures in total. I guess the shot was spoiled a little by the line... ah.. Well, the line was the meeting point of two sheets of paper. I think the multi-exposure made the line more noticeable. Although the line wasn't intentional in the original shot, I thought (as inspzil suggested) that it helped the overall illusion. I thought the line dividing the picture was like a metaphor for the dolls, which also were divided in two, and also helped the transparency illusion. But I guess it was pretty distracting and the shot would have looked better without it. |
| 10/28/2002 04:34:00 PM | Galileo feels the heatby gerardComment: Thanks for the feedback guys! It was my first entry on dpchallenge. Although I was initially happy with the picture, trying to do "dramatic" lighting, I can see that the light source was much too harsh. It would have looked better with a more plain, white background, and a more interesting angle to elminate the space at the sides. |
