"The "message" the soft focus is meant to convey is the idealization we have in symbols and icons. When we conjure up thoughts of the bald eagle, we tend to have idealized images of a majestic bird soaring in the wilds of Alaska. The soft focus helps our minds to get there. "
Attractive photo, although I'm not sure the bald eagle is soft and fuzzy in the classical icon. If anything, this picture could be a sort of political commentary or iconoclast imagery. I just don't really see that this photo embraces the sharp, powerful image of an eagle.

The thing I like about this, is the stark contrast between the silhouetted and the background. Many photos in this particular competition have fuzzy edges that take away from the strong emotion silhouettes are supposed to evoke. Likewise, this photo seems less arbitrary and contrived than most in this competition. (I really don't care what a statue of a man with a banjo looks like juxtapositioned against a sunset)
