Thanks for the the comments folks.
I'm really just getting the hang of the camera now. I bought a spyder monitor calibrator over the weekend, and after calibration, I realise how muted the colours are.
I had tried a few different crops and decided to leave the old slate roof in shot, only because the chimney flue is actually tied on with parcel twine, the compression needed to make it entry sized removed that detail.

I'm going to play with it more since the monitor calibration, the red and blue should be alot stronger.

As an aside, I took this shot on a Saturday for the competition. The building has been derelict for at least 10 years. I passed by it on the way home from work on the following Monday only to see a skip (dumpster) outside it and workmen leaving.
