Hello folks,

I was fooling around with the Rebel today and I notice a speck of dust when I look into the view finder. I've already verified this is not on the lens; but I'm not sure about the sensor.

Also, if I shoot a plain white background I don't see the speck (large enough to appear) on my image. Guess its not a problem if it doesn't show up on my images, its still annoying though when I look into the viewfinder :/
Any insights as to where I should be looking to get rid of it? Thanks.

If it appears to be in focus, it's on the focusing screen.

Oh yeah its pretty sharp, do I blow it out?

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago and I think it was on the mirror. I would try to blow it off either the mirror or the screen. Mine disappeared after a quick blow.

Just leave it alone. If you can see it through the viewfinder it's not on the sensor. If it's in sharp focus, it's probably actually behind the focusing screen. The mirror and the focusing screen are both easily damaged, so it's best not to touch either, even with a lens brush. You can so way more damage trying to get it out than it's doing right now, which is nothing other than being mildly annoying.

Hi-ho,

I'd be giving the blower a shot..

I think Jimmy's being a little over cautious by not doing anything.. If you've got a blower-bulb, give it a go on the mirror and screen.

I do agree that a great deal of caution needs to be used if you're going to be using the brush though.

If it's on the bottom ('outside') of the focusing screen, and can be blown off, you'll be able to see it without a lens on, so you can verify pretty quickly if the blower bulb has done the trick.

Jimmy is correct that if the mark is in very clear focus, it's more than likely on the back (Top) side of the screen, and might be something you have to live with, or get a camera repair firm to look at.

Canon SLR's focus on the inside / top surface of the screen.. (most do as far as I know).

And if you're not sure where the focusing screen is, it's above the mirror in the camera body, on the 'roof' of the camera 'box'. Just point your blower bulb up there and blow a few times, don't touch the mirror or screen with the tip..

Hmmm, just looking at my 20D... In the good old days with my OM4 I could just un-clip the screen to clean it, looks like a major operation on the 20D... And from the photos on dpreview of the lens mount the 300D looks the same. 'No user serviceable parts inside'.

Good luck, and if you're not confident, take the fish's advice. :-).

Cheers, Chris H.
