I am getting ready to buy a domain & getg a web host but first I wanted to hit you cool cats up with some suggestions on the best web host around that is cheap. I need the web host to provide mysql & php functions.
THnaks in advance & I look forward to hearing from ya all!
Also, if anyone knows of a good text editor or a web developing software that also works off a visiual interface as well as code, that would be great! If the software is free, that's even better. Right now I am fluent in frontpage & from what I hear that sucks & most all try to stay away from it.
thanks again! |

1and1? I signed up with them for their free trial but never wound up doing anything with it. May be worth checking out though.

I've been very happy with CrystalTech.com. Only $7.95/month with generous bandwidth and disk space. Php and mysql at no charge as long as your database stays under a certain size, which is also generous. The only downtime I've experienced was when they moved their datacenter and they were back online exactly when they said they would be.

100% Powweb - //www.powweb.com
Right now, 6 months free with their year package.
* 2 gig storage
* 5 gig per DAY bandwidth
* free domain and setup
* free marketing
* subdomains (10 I think)
* custom error pages
* php, cgi, mysql compatible, flash, shockwave, pretty much everything
* 650 email addresses w/ spam filters, etc
* OScommerce cart-ready.
They are AWESOME.

Rooster!
Admittedly I don't know what mysql & php are, but I can tell you I pay $14 (a month, CND) for hosting through CTCommunications and I get tons of space, options, features (I have a third party who does the programming). I've never had any server problems or anything like that. I'd watch out for newer companies since if they go under, so does your site, your name and your money.

1and1.com is an excellent host. I signed up for the freebie too and will probably be moving all my sites over to them (and I'm a reseller for another host).
They are very reasonable and their Control Panel is very easy to use. They also include a MySQL database or multiple ones, depending on the package.

well..this is not the easiest method but it is certainly the most cost effective and educational (I believe you stated in your last thread that you wanted to gain some experience through this endeavor)
Do it yourself! Its really not that bad if you have broadband access.
just load up Apache which installs on its own, then install PHP and mySQL accordingly.
with the exception of mySQL thats how I run my website

I have been using addr.com for my shop's website now for over 3 years. Generous bandwidth and space, up time is like 99.5%, has a web-based interface/control panel if something needs to be uploaded/deleted/changed when you are on the road and don't have an FTP program handy, site statistics and many other features.

Go through Crystaltech. I've had domains hosted there for about 7 years now. They have excellent customer service, great prices, and lot's of storage space (and email address). |

host my own on a little webfarm, win 2k3 box running IIS, and another box running MS-SQL / backup site, HW and SW firewalls, all run with propietary tools and management console from my laptop most of the time or local account for heavy hitting.
But then my home cable connection (just by location) is a little over the speed of a T1 feed, Upload and Download. Great learning experiance, everyone should try!
Now i just have to hack my router so it automaticly falls over to the live server if #1 goes down...

I've been using and reselling for ADDR.com for about 5 years. The last year I have had several issue with them and the last month they have been extremely unstable, leaving my clients and my site down. Then when you contact tech support for a status on the server issues, they tell you there are no problems, which I find odd, since the ADDR.com wesite had just been unavailable for a couple days.
I regularly am NOT able to get my mail from my POP accounts through them, not to mention I have been getting spammed like crazy through my base e-mail accounts (my_acct_name@addr.com), which is not listed ANYWHERE by me.
I signed up for 1and1.com's trial and have my photography site there and have had zero problems. Their user interface/control panel is much faster and easier to use than ADDR's. I will most likely be moving all of my hosting over to 1and1 this year.

IIS is free with windows XP 2000 and 2003 (it will be on your install disk in the 'extras' folder for XP)
as for MS-SQL I'm not sure how much it costs (but it won't be cheep). I got my copy off of MSDN:AA through a site license. |

I cannot say enough about Site Build It; all inclusive (no need to know ANY technical stuff), great price, includes price of domain name registration, built in newsletter capability, great plug-in "store" capabilities, outstanding customer service. I searched for a web host for a long time, and haven't found anything even close.
