I am facing a nearly impossible task at work, to build a thriving online community. To my knowledge, there are very few successful places online where people gather on a regular basis. The one that really sticks out as a shining example is DPC with hundreds of frequent users/participants. So, my question to the DPC community is this:

What brings you here time after time?

Are you here to learn? To talk with others who share your interests? Or is it something else altogether (like avoiding work)? Thanks in advance for any input.

All of the above - LOL!
This is truly an amazing website. I am a fanatic and totally obsessed. I can't tell you how much I have learned along the way. I only discovered the website last October. So many others are as obsessed as I am. This website is phenomenal.

All of the above. To learn from other peoples eyes and to help others when I can. From what I have gathered here from my three months of membership this is a very tight community. We may disagree sometimes but we all understand that we all have an opinion and if you post a shot for advice on how to improve you have to take the good with the bad. And remember don't take anything to heart we are just trying to help each other improve and reach our full potential.

Photography is a very visual art, and the web is a very visual medium. It's a perfect match.

I think the secret to the success of DPC is the participation. Entering the challenges gives a sense of involvement. Also, the people are very generous in sharing their comments and expertise. (You're great guys!)

The website is very well laid out, easy to use, and looks professional.
The forums are not "busy", like www.fredmiranda.com. (I mean visually busy, by the way)

Personally, I am here to learn by entering my own photos, and by looking at the good and bad, thus developing my eye for a good shot.

My 2 cents!
Paula

What brings me here? The RIBBONS! The thrill of pushing the update button. (Did the score go up from the night before? Will it go down before change over?) So exciting! hehehe...

I really enjoy the challenges that teach me something new..like the "Light on White" challenge or really anything that makes me mess with my settings and surroundings. I also enjoy the forums..I feel like we are all family here. It gets a little heated once in a while but for the most part I love everyone here. :-)

There are other very successsful forums, but all that I have seen lack that sense of community that DPC has in spades. I firmly believe that this is rooted in:

1.) Participation. The excitement and, well, challenge of the challenges is infectious and encourages communication on an emotional as well as intellectual level.
2.) The fact that our forums are not over-policed for OT content, the way many are. It's that very OT content that provides the deeper attriction of DPC; when we're here, it feels like a real community, because it it one.
3.) An interface that encourages exploration.

i love the chance of seeing an image I would've never thought of, and drawing inspiration from that.

i also feel that photographers/artists alike are sort of a 'clan' that should stick together and draw from each others experience.

other than that, i like sitting on my butt on the computer. lol

It is an easy way to meet, discuss and share ideas with a large number of others about a subject that they all think and feel similarly about.

to learn and use my time which I used to waste so royally :>

There's always something new...
....and I help create some of what's new--whether it's a forum post, a challenge photo, an addition to my portfolio, etc.
So, as others have said, it's the participation and interaction that keeps me coming back.
Besides, these are the some of th best, most helpful, incredibly intelligent and good looking (see self-portrait challenges) people you'll meet on or off the web. =)

The same thing that makes people stand and watch a train reck or a car accident. I know I shouldn't waste my time here.

There are several books on Amazon.com regarding the challenges of building thriving online communities. Do an Amazon search for "online communities"

Also check out www.everything2.com. That site has been around for years and has a solid user base.

I come here for two reasons:

1. I love photography and DPC is an ideal way to learn and share ideas relating to this art and craft.

2. It's a great way to kill time while at a job I hate.

I'm only here because I'm hiding from the cops!

Drew and Langdon secretly used the membership money to to install crack injectors on all of the right click buttons in the world. Whenever you click on the update button you are rewaded a small dose wich satisfies you for about five minutes. Slowly addicting the DPC community to the almighty update button.......
or the fact the we all share the same passion, and speak in a language only other photographers will understand. In our photography we express are feelings and emotions. By sharing these with one another and openly discussing them with one another we have grown closer. It also help knowing that the others have had the same hardships, everything from a busted lens, copyright, to how to percfect the lighting on a rose.

I come here to learn, witness the experiences of other visitors, grow my skills and knowledge. This site provides an extremely welcoming community experience that has helped me learn more about my camera and photography in general, then I would have learned simply on my own.

If you want to build a good community, you have to first list all the elements (minus the people) that makes a community good. Build all of that, let some people know about it and if things work out, you have a community. You cannot force a community, it just happens because the right elements are there to attract the right people.

A cop, no. But I can get you added to the terrorist watch list. That's much worse than doing time.
