It seems like many photo titles are treated like the subject of an email or forum post. I hate to say it, but a stupidly named photo will affect the score for me. But, maybe that's just me? :)

It's not just you.. I like creatively titled photos also... I try not to let it affect my score but i sometimes comment on the title.. lol..

Not this again!

So will you mark down photos named "untitled"?
01/03/2003 01:29:59 AM · #5
Absolutely not. I often think that no title is better than a bad one.

I like a title that 'integrates' with the photo rather than one that 'supports' it...
01/03/2003 03:07:43 AM · #7
What exactly do you mean by that? What's the difference between integration and support? Examples?

Let's just say that an integrated title 'agrees' with the image rather than explains it...

Example:

Title "...Loves Me Not"

Now if I would have titled this "A Pedal" it doesn't have nearly the affect and is more reminiscent of Brandonarbini's commment of "email title"

I would expect higher scores just because the title carries out a theme and puts a thought in the viewers eye. Ask most pro's, they will agree on this whole heartedly.

Excellent picture. I think the title definitely makes it and adds an emotive quality to the image.

I think that a creative title can add to the enjoyment of a picture. On the other hand I also feel that if the title is not properly interpreted by the viewer it may take away from the viewers appreciation of the quality of the picture in and of itself resulting in a lower score. As an example, check out my submission in this week's theme, "Travel", when the contest is over and see if you think my title took away from the picture. I would be very interested in everyone's opinion.

Oh, yeah. I spend a lot of time coming up with a title before I submit. Sometimes I am even thinking of a title while shooting. Nothing I love better than a nice, somewhat obscure or oblique title.

I think this song title challenge is a good exercise in shooting with a title already in mind :)

I hesitate to bring this subject matter up again, but....

If a title is deemed to be a essential element of the image (and I agree fully with the many valid points made by John and the others), then why is the border question dissimilar? It is my opinion that both the title and the border are fundamental components of the photograph and they should be judged as an ingredient of the submission by the audience.

I agree with this completely. If you add a border to your image, it should enhance the image in some way. Don't do it just because you can :)

Dave's image of the flower above makes the border point too. It is a magnificent photograph, with a superb title, and an astonishing border. How did you add that border? It is just like a matte found on a gallery image.

It looks like there is another software program that I need to buy? Truly a wonderful image and fastidious use of the DOF, just as I like it. Now, if it would have been a RED flower, my head would of exploded with joy! ;-) Michael

Well then, maybe I should just go with untitled so brandon doesn't score me down because he doesnt care for my title.

Now, THAT would be an interesting photo! :)

I like creative, interesting titles as well, but as I go through and do my voting I repeat to myself, 'not everyone is clever, not everyone is clever'.

Actually, that applies to life in general as well. ;-)

Seriously though, some people are humor impaired, or words don't come easily to them or english isn't their first language. I try really hard not to ding them for that.

Titles can go either way... they can be clever or they can be extra descriptive or they can be stupid or they can be just plain over my head. Maybe a small exercise in titling photos could be in order :)

While it is true that not everyone is clever, the photographs that are well named and have appropriate borders deserve to be rated higher than the ones that are not. Right?

Generally speaking I have no problem with photos named "untitled". But challenges like Photojournalism demand titled photos.

Brandon, Let me ask you something. Is this a title/photography challenge or a photography challenge? Don't get the two mixed up.
01/03/2003 08:46:23 PM · #24
I happen to hate titles. They are often a source of frustration for me and I rarely feel satisfied with the titles I come up with (which is why outside of this site, I pretty much never title my photos at all). That said, a title will inherently effect the scoring of an image, just like a boarder will, because it effects the overall enjoyment of the shot. However, I would tend to say that the main purpose of a title is to differentiate between shots, and that they shouldn't be intentionally factored into scoring.

Clapping for Sonifo. :)
