I'm just curious...does it sort of get to you, personally, when you take a lot of time out and people don't find your comments helpful? I mean when it's all said and done, that is the true reward, getting that box checked, and the comment found helpful...as if what you said meant something or the photographer learned something from your comment.
I mean whether someone agrees with what was said or not, I just find it so hard to pour my time into something and have it not found helpful.

sort of, but then again there are people who mark everything helpful (me!) so are comments like 'cool' or something really helping? |

When I joined the Critique Club I started out by giving 2 critiques and then held my breath. Neither were checked helpful and 6 or so months later I am finding it hard to go back and give it another try. Kind of sorry on my part I guess.

You got me curious so I went back and checked all of my entries. I have about 90% marked helpful. Only a few where the comment was way off or it was one of those list scoring 0/5 comments that I had not marked helpful. I find the comments generally to amazingly helpful. I would probably found yours helpful but you have not left me any.

I wonder if we have a seperate box for "Comment received" and another for "Comment Helpful." I use the "Helpful" box as a "I've read your comment and thanks." |

i actually find most of the comments i recieve to be helpful but then i doubt you can expect that from a lot of people. i have only been into photography for the last year or so but into art in general for a long long time. i find most artists, especially the ones not too entirely serious about it, to be unaccepting of constructive criticism. i appreciate the comments and want them to keep coming.
by the way... i DO NOT apologise for my spelling...
dammit Jim! I'm an artist not an english major! |

How about a "comment appreciated" box instead of helpful? Although I find many comments not to actually be helpful by definition of the word, I like to mark them as such to let people know that I appreciate them taking the time to comment on my image.

Many people have suggested something along those lines on many different occasions.
I am still waiting to see a SC member acknowledge it and least promise to consider it. |

I like the "comment appreciated" idea. I have to admit it sometimes is a little frustrating to spend the time it takes to leave a comment and not know if it was even looked at.
I try to rationalize it to myself by trying to learn and improve my own pictures by the comments I leave after studying an other's work. Sometimes it may actually work! |

I have to admit, someitimes I just plain forget to check the little boxes. And up until about 10 minutes ago, I didn't even know that you could leave comments after the challenge was over, and that, in fact, when you get a critique from the club, that's what they do. I got a nice email awhile back saying that my image had be critiqued, but there were no comments in the email, and I was a little confused. I just now found them. Ok, so I'm slow... I'm sure I'll catch on at some point Ü |

When I get a chance to comment on a challenge, which is rarely, I try to only comment where I see that I can leave constructive advice. I also wind up making a few comments on friends' images. I find it near impossible to get much above 85% helpful. I think that if folks find more than about 70% of your comments helpful, you're doing very well. I don't sweat it, I just tell 'em what I feel will help 'em.

Not having entered challenges, only posting pics in the forums, any comment I get I check as 'helpful'. IMHO if they just say that it is 'nice', it captured their attention for a moment. Further recommendations for crops, angles, etc are a bonus for me.
By the same token, I need to give comments on pics I look at, even if is just to say 'nice'

I really haven't noticed. I have never checked my critiques for "Helpful" or not (I don't know how to anyway).
I'm not interested in the response to me. My critique is for the photog and it's about sharing thoughts and ideas about the image. It doesn't matter to me if they mark it, I assume that all comments on an image are helpful.
I'm assuming EVERYONE in CC sends a PM to the photographer telling them there's a critique been done?

Those are the ones I find most annoying. It's happened to me several times. You make a serious comment about something you see in the photo that needs improvement, return to it a week later, only to find that the shot received a dozen or more comments but none have been checked as helpful. Makes me think that the photog has not even read the comments.

The easiest way to resolve all the issues with minimal work would be to remove the this comment was helpful box all together.

So how would I know you read the comment?
And, as a member of the CC, how would I know you read the comment I may have spent a 1/2 hour on (or more)?
I would really like to see a better scheme for people to acknowledge comments! You don't have to find them "helpful" or "interesting" or anything....just check the box so we know you're still alive and can read! All that's being asked is that someone check a box to note that you have read what was written. (And if you can't figure out how to check the box...how the hell do you manage to upload pictures to this site!?!) |

When I find a comment I've left that isn't marked, I check that photographer's profile to see if they ever mark comments as "helpful" - most of the time they don't mark any at all, and I suspect they either don't know about it or routinely ignore it completely. |

I will always check a box when someone has taken the time to comment on my work. However I have recently had a comment, and I quote; "unimpressed" the person was anonymous. In my opinion this is rude and unacceptable! I can understand if they leave justified critisism because you learn from this but "unimpressed" is neither helpfull or kind so I refuse to tick the box! |

Actually, i kind of find it annoying when critique club members act as if their comments are automatically going to be dazzling and the recipient is a raging ingrate if they don't find them helpful, or even pm to thank you personally. I have personally seen some thoroughly unhelpful critique club critiques (not on any of my images), where the critiquer has not even bothered to read the photographer's own notes before telling them to do what they have already done - or just saying how they like most of it and they wouldn't really change anything. I'm sure the majority would agree, that just isn't a "critique" worthy of a helpful tick, no matter what self-important credentials are behind it.
