I think he shot multiple frames and then cut/paste them in changing the opacity. If you look hard between the far left and middle image you can see some color breaks over the sand. Especially over the hand of the far left image.

I did something "like" it here.

He did it during a total solar eclisp and used flash.

1.) Take 3 photos in rapid succession without moving the camera.
2.) Open all 3 pics in Photoshop
3.) Select the "move" tool
4.) While holding the "shift' key, drag pics 2 and 1 to pic 3, in that order. They will appear as new layers.
5.) Adjust opacity of the top two layers to suit.
6.) Create Layer masks on the top two layers
7.) Mask off all areas you don't want to show from the top two layers
8.) Done!
