I love this photo. I actually got dizzy looking at it. This reminds me of my childhood. Maybe if you would have put a finger under the wheel. Just kidding. This is what I call picture in motion. :)

What is wrong with the composition in this? Please explain. The unusual viewpoint, imho, is what makes the composition along with the movement.
I think this is a great photo, John.

Hey Chill!
I didn't say there was anything wrong with the composition, I just said I wasn't keen on it. Is that not allowed here? I just find it too symmetrical for my tastes.
I kind of assumed I was entitled to see things as I see them, and that JMS was interested in all viewpoints to the photo, not just those which think it's awesome.

I am definitely open to any and all viewpoints... I just can't imagine a different composition working on this photo :) Symmetry works sometimes and not others :)

No, I can't imagine a different viewpoint working on this either. The subject wouldn't be so identifiable, you wouldn't be able to follow the direction and speed and movement. What I was trying to explain, not very articulately, is that this photo doesn't particularly appeal to me, not because I think it could be taken better, but because I personally just don't happen to visually like overly centred photos and therefore am not attracted to this one. :)

There is no need to be defensive.
Of course all viewpoints are allowed and accepted. However your first post said you were "not keen on the composition", and I, in the vein of pleasant conversation, intended to inquire if you wouldn't mind elaborating on that. You have your opinion, and I have mine. That's fine. I just happen to think some photos work better while breaking the rules.
Excuse me if I struck a nerve.

I don't think this photo is about breaking any rules... in general, kavey is right... a lot of images dont' work well when they are centered... there is no real rule on this.. The rule of thirds can't be applied to certain images, this being one of them unfortunately.

I don't find it unfortunate in this instance. Again, I was just asking her to explain or go into detail a bit, as I was curious about her point of view.

I am here to learn so I thought I would submit my Outtake for this week. Let me know what you think please.
My Childhood Outtake
I actually have another but it is the variation of the one I submitted so it will have to wait. |

Isn't it frustrating when you have an image in your mind of what you want, and just can't duplicate it for everyone else to see! But I like that photo LOTS... love the perspective, the feeling of speed, and excitement. Never could ride one of those things! |

Apologies. actually I read your original message as being defensive on John's behalf - it sounded like you were reproaching me for my comment about composition because you thought composition was good.
Seems like neither of us can read each other's nuances in writing...
:)
Anyway, hope my explanation made sense, and was what you were asking...

JM, It's a really cool perspective. As mentioned, I would detract for the fuzzy focus on the board. It would have also been much more interesting to have a different setting. A tree lined street or buildings would be better. That pole and thing (bench?) on the left just aren't very interesting. Also, I like the transition from the dark underside of the board to the bright surroundings, but in B&W there ended up being a lot of bright white, blown-out background. |

Not one? Anyone? (I'm beginning to beg here!) ;) [/i]
The bicycle wheel shot is my favorite :) I like the motion... It reminds me of all those painful bike accidents i had as a child... I'm uspet now... mooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!
;)
My favorite is the slide. Great perspective and would look frightening to a small child.

The fuzzy focus on the stationary elements of the photo is exactly why I did not use this image...
