You do realize you are going to compete with the Magnificent seven in this challenge don´t you? Five of us have access to studios and five of us have ribboned with colour portrait shots in studios so all I have to say is a quote from a old AC/DC song...

"For those about to die, we salute you..." :P

now that was just mean...

So, for those of you worried about not having a studio, you can take studio like photos without one.

This shot of my son was taken in front of a south facing window on a overcast day. The backdrop was the window curtains pulled behind him and clipped to a chair. No lights used. Some poster board was used as a reflector for even lighting.

If it's too sunny, try an east window in the afternoon or a west window in the morning or a north window whenever. If I can do it, anybody can!

Do you think it has to have the "SEARS PHOTO STUDIO" type background to be considered "studio?" I don't think so.

Bwa ha ha ha I have had a "date" to take a girl's portrait for a week. hee hee - glad it wasn't before the new challenge announcement. HOpe I can do what I see in my head. ;~p

That is actually very good advice and that´s exactly how the old masters did it, just used a big window that faced north and natural light and nothing more...

Very nice indeed but just remember sweetie, it's not the equipment, it's the person operating the equipment so no matter how big or small your equipment may be, if you know how to use it properly you can please everyone and kick some butt! ;)

Better tools make better pictures possible.

sorry, was trying to make a joke and possibly boost up the spirits of those of us who don't have access to all the wonderful tools.

No, Deannda, you are completely right! I knew I wanted to concentrate on portrait work a few years ago and began with window light and sheets for bgs - It can be done anywhere with any amount of equipment with great success. Having the studio means that I can shoot mine in the middle of the night if I want, but that's about the only REAL advantage.

Wonderful tools dont always make the best portraits...I've seen as good as some of the best portrature done with natural light and a white wall

I was just thinking since this an advanced rules challenge, it'd be quite easy to flat light the subject and then add lighting interest post-process. I'd give photogs with lightspheres just as much chance in this challenge as those with studios.

Just remember that all studio lighting seeks to mimmic natural lighting, so don't get scared if you are studio-less.

A tip for those who may struggle - My first reflector, and one I still use regularly is a piece of cardboard covered with aluminium foil. Works great to get the lighting to fill in the shadow areas a bit (like under the chin or the side of the face that is away from the light source).

Woo! We get to see more pictures from the likes of Kosmik, DrJones, Larus, Pedro and DrJones. Oh did I mention him twice? Oops! ;)

I guess that's all the more reason to put effort into beating them right?

Mean....but probably true. Sorry to my team, but I have no idea when it comes to portraits. And by the way, the line is "For those about to rock, we salute you" so thanks!

I have some great memories about the 1st Color Studio Portraits Challenge.
It was my 2nd challenge, it was the 1st day with my Digital Rebel, my 1st real digital camera and almost scored a 6.
It was my 1st try at portraiture. (Well, ok, it was a sanpshot)

OK let's see if I have gotten any better in these 2 years...
